Gayle Benjamin, WBC Board Member and Business Leader at Jacobs Engineering will replace Jayne Czik as WBC’s Recording Secretary. We welcome Gayle and her new leadership role as one of WBC’s officers. We appreciate Czik’s robust support of WBC and her continuing role as co-chair of WBC’s Public Policy Committee.

Tanya Pope, Vice President, Public Policy
Tanya Pope, former WBC Corresponding Secretary, is returning to WBC’s Executive Committee as Vice President of Public Policy. She brings great experience to WBC’s Public Policy Committee through her work as Assistant Vice President, University Supplier Diversity, Columbia University Facilities and Operations. In this new role, Pope will be working with WBC’s Public Policy Committee on key issues related to Certification and the re-authorization of Article 15-A.

Julie Valerio Retires from STV and WBC
Julie Valerio, Design Manager and Senior Associate at STV Construction, Inc., has recently retired from STV. Valerio is a 30 year veteran of the construction industry, beginning at STV in 2016, and with WBC since 2011. She has brought incredible value to STV in her most recent position as a senior leader at the new South Brooklyn Health Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital, formerly known as Coney Island Hospital. Her work as WBC’s co-chair of Membership contributed to WBC’s growth over the last several years. She will be sorely missed.

Nadine Roper, Vice President, Membership and Communications
Nadine Roper, Vice President, Strategic Growth Marketing, Marketing Communications at STV, will now assume STV’s board seat and now serves as Vice President, Membership and Communications. Roper has a plethora of new ideas for growing WBC’s membership, and she will work with committee co-chairs Denise Berger, WBC Vice President and Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer AECOM East Region and Deborah Bradly, President, DBC, on these initiatives.

Lisa Howlett to Reassume WBC Board Position
Lisa Kathryn Howlett, General Counsel, Senior Vice President and Secretary at Hunter Roberts Construction Group and a former WBC board member, will reassume Guiliana Benedicty’s board seat at Hunter Roberts. Howlett has been very involved in WBC’s Design Build Task Force, and we hope she will continue that work through WBC.

The Ambassador Council had their mentor/mentee match-making networking event on Wednesday, September 13 at Winnie’s Jazz Bar. This event gave the mentors and mentees an opportunity to connect in-person and get to know each other better.

Article 15-A Reauthorization
WBC’s Public Policy Committee hosted the second round of meetings related to certification, size standards, and Article 15-A Reauthorization. Our next meeting is Friday, September 22. Recently, WBC met with Jason Clark, Executive Vice President of Empire State Development on issues related to certification, ESD procedures and other related MWBE issues and topics. WBC will continue to engage its Public Policy Committee in additional conversations. Additionally, WBC is working with Senator Sanders to continue discussion on specific issues related to reauthorization of Article 15-A.

The State of New York has commissioned MGT Consulting to conduct a comprehensive Disparity Study to determine the effects of race, ethnicity, or gender on a business’s ability to do business in the State – both public and private sectors, acquire capital such as loans or bonding and win contracts or subcontracts in the marketplace in which the State does business.

Congratulations to Palmina Whelan, WBC’s Corresponding Secretary, on her new role as Capital Program Director at The New Terminal One at JFK.
This adds yet another role to her extensive background in master site planning, design, construction management, stakeholder collaboration, and commercial growth, where she has managed over $6 billion in transformation programs, achieving substantial quality and commercial outcomes, and enhancing shareholder value.
