2nd ANNUAL EDU-DAY – CELEBRATING KITCHEN & BATH MONTH AND THE 60th ANNIVERSARY OF THE NKBA

By Diana Mosher -- The NKBA Manhattan chapter was honored to be selected by NKBA National to host a 60th Anniversary event on October 26 at the A&D Building in NYC coinciding with our NKBA Manhattan 2nd Annual Education Day. Our Edu-Day also celebrated Kitchen & Bath Month, and we used this opportunity to roll out a new membership drive concept: non-members who become paid members by Dec 5th, 2023 are eligible for our drawing of the fabulous Miele Triflex HX1 Cordless Vacuum (MSRP $1,000)!

Also, Edu-Day attendees had the opportunity to earn four CEUs. The day kicked off at the Miele showroom for registration sign-in, sponsor swag bags, and networking breakfast sponsored by Miele and Renovation Angel.

A packed keynote luncheon at the Fisher & Paykel showroom featured NKBA CEO Bill Darcy, Jr., who explored the current market landscape and its impact on the multi-billion dollar K&B industry, offering attendees invaluable information for their successful 2024 business direction.

The afternoon continued with three additional CEU events sponsored by:

Thermador: “The Evolution of Wellness Design a 60-Year Retrospective,” moderated by Sharon L Sherman of Thyme & Place Design with Dani Polidor, Founder & Senior Home Specialist, EveryBody.Homes;

Hastings Bath Collection: “Science Fiction to Reality: 60 Years of Home Tech” moderated by Tony Monteleone, Group Publisher, Connected Design Magazine, with panelists JoAnn Arcenal, Crestron; Greg Barrett, Savant; Becca Ryan, Lutron; Michele Chesnut – Nice; Aubrey Bertin, WAC/ AiSPiRE Lighting; and

(Shown In the photograph above–Volunteers Rose Ott, Suzie Wheeler, Sandra Chong-Singh, and Barbara Haberman–shown in the picture at left holding down the fort at Registration.)

Cosentino: “Brilliant Residential Lighting Techniques in the Age of LEDS” with Charles Pavarini III, a prominent Designers Lighting Forum (DLF) member, and J. Randall Tarasuk, co-author. Afterward, a book signing with the authors of "LIGHTING BEYOND EDISONtook place.

EduDay concluded with a festive Dacor-sponsored cocktail reception celebrating 60 years of the NKBA with VIP guests, including Bill Darcy, Jr., NKBA CEO, plus speeches, raffles, video retrospectives, food, and cocktails.

We thank all our sponsors for participating and a special shout-out to our venue sponsors: Cosentino, Dacor, Fisher & Paykel, Hastings, Miele, Renovation Angel, Thermador, and the A&D Building. In addition, a special thank you to the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and their team for their partnership with the Manhattan Chapter and for their support and planning.

Also, a big THANK YOU–Shout Out to our Volunteers who made the day seamlessly run,

SPOTLIGHT ON TONI SABATINO

By Melisa Jahic -- Toni is truly a woman of many talents. She has been in the industry for her entire adult life. Previous to starting her own business, she worked as a designer and salesperson for a wholesale cabinet supplier, doing hundreds of kitchen, bath, and millwork designs per year. She also ran a plumbing supply and demonstrated solid surface materials.

When asked why she chose interior design as her career path, Toni said, “I love that design matters. Everything we use was designed by someone. Designers matter, and we positively impact how people live. Residential interior design is an opportunity to create a wonderful space for life to happen.”

Clockwise from top left: The not so glamourous side of interior design; a beautiful two-story closet; a bright sitting area.

Toni went on to say that understanding the needs and desires of the inhabitants and incorporating their passions into a space that reflects who they are and makes them feel beauty and happiness gives her a great sense of work satisfaction.

Toni couldn’t name just one thing to be deemed as her “favorite part” of the job, but she did mention that the opportunity to work with people and be creative makes her very happy.

When discussing her day-to-day, Toni explained that each day is unique. Some days have job-site visits, others paperwork, designing on Chief Architect, or placing and checking material orders. Meeting with clients and creating, reviewing, and revising plans is a big part of what she does as well, and she also loves to visit showrooms and attend trade shows and events to keep her outlook fresh and stay up on the new products that are being offered.

In terms of her contributions to our local chapter of the NKBA, which are many, Toni mentioned she truly appreciates the kitchen and bath business and wanted to give back to an industry that accepted her and allowed her to grow professionally and personally. “Joining the NKBA and becoming a board member was a great way to do that. I enjoyed all the positions I held: membership, communications, and president. I was honored to be NKBA Star Award winning Chapter President of the Year in 2019,” says Toni. Currently, sponsorship was a natural transition, due to all the relationships she formed during her time on the board, and we are lucky to have her.

When asked to share a piece of advice with our members, Toni left us with some wonderful words:

“Participate! Get involved! There is a wealth of knowledge and some great people at our NKBA chapter. It feels good to talk shop to people that understand and may even help you in some way with a connection or a product. Aside from the professional aspect, it is also just plain fun.”

October 26th was a big day in our chapter, one that I hope you attended for at least part of the day and/or evening. We held our 2nd annual Education Day with the added bonus of co-hosting the NKBA 60th Anniversary celebration. As one of a select number of chapters chosen, we kicked off that day with keynote speaker, Bill Darcy, CEO, of NKBA National. Bill shared with our attendees a great deal of the research done annually by NKBA as to the health and direction of our industry. A fascinating talk! Everyone was engaged, and there were a lot of follow up questions from the audience. This was followed by an interview with Programs Chair Joan Ravasy, after which we all moved on into the additional CEU presentations of the day. The event concluded at Dacor with the 60th Anniversary party. What a blast!

Next, we’ll be heading off to LG headquarters in New Jersey on November 16th, courtesy of Gold Sponsor Signature Kitchen Suite. You’ll

have seen the invitation in your inbox, so make certain to register for luxury bus transport to the wonderful new Skyline Showroom at LG for our next chapter meeting. Following that is our annual Member’s Only Holiday Party on December 6th, to be held at True Residential. So keep your eye out for that invitation as well, and get your membership up to date so you don’t miss it! There is always so much going on, and no better time to become a member. There is still time to reach out to our Membership Chair, Jeannine Price, at jeannineprice@gmail.com

You might have also received notice already of KBIS 2024 in your inbox. It may seem far away, but there is no time to waste in getting registered for this fun trip to Las Vegas on your calendar for February. It is always one of the industry’s premier trade shows with SO MUCH to see and learn, as well as the fun of Las Vegas!

As 2023 winds to a close, so does my term as your President. It has been an honor to serve both the organization and you, our members, first as Programs Chair and now as President. While I’ll be stepping away for a year, I won’t be far away. I am looking forward to continuing to see you all at our events and activities in the new year. And, of course, at KBIS in Las Vegas!

MY FIRST CEDIA EXPERIENCE

By Julie Schuster -- From September 6th through 9th, I enjoyed attending the CEDIA 2023 Expo in Denver, Colorado. This is an event that I have been wanting to attend for several years now. COVID blocked my original attempt, and it took until now for me to be able to make it happen. So, I’m thrilled to be able to share this experience!

The first activity of the show was a keynote opening address by technology and innovation expert Scott Steinberg, who addressed the AI explosion and its impact. We enjoyed being invited guests to The Day Of Discovery by "Technology Designer Magazine" founders Carol and Doug Campbell and partner Eric Schwartz.

This children’s book highlights careers in the building and technology industries. Its intent is to show young children the people and skills that collectively go into building a home. The book was a gift of our speaker at the Women and Consumer Technology luncheon, Quadra Evans of Zillow. Getting this message out to young people is a life passion of hers, and I couldn’t agree more!

Two of our NKBA Manhattan sponsors @Crestron and @Savant were very well represented. Julie continues to recount her visit with our NKBA Team at CEDIA. @Sandra Chong, @Toni Sabatino, @Rose Ott, @Barara Haberman @Greg Barrett, @JoAnn Arcenal, Eric Schwartz
