July’s Hottest Ticket:
Summer Social and NKBA Design + Tech Summit
Hosted by Samsung
| | By Diana Mosher— This year’s summer social dazzled us on July 25 with an exciting circus theme spanning all levels of Samsung 837’s immersive experience center in the Meatpacking District. The “Greatest Summer Social on Earth” was organized jointly by the New York Design Coalition, comprised of the NKBA Manhattan Chapter, ASID NY Metro, IFDA NY, IDS NYC, and DLFNY. The Summer Social brought together members of all five associations for an evening of fun and networking. | | |
Toni also moderated “All Together Now” with NKBA Manhattan member Sharon L. Sherman, CKD, of Thyme & Place Design; Katye Bennett of KMB Communications; and Ed Gilmore of Gilmore’s Sound Advice. This session focused on today’s high-performance home and creating tech/design partnerships that successfully navigate budget, timeline, and client communication.
Greg Barrett, Director of Product Marketing, Lighting and Shades, for Savant Systems, NKBA Manhattan Gold Sponsor, was a panelist on “Designers Walk into the Light,” moderated by Tony Monteleone, Group Publisher, Dealerscope, CE Week and Connected Design. Home technology today must blend into spaces while being super easy to operate. That’s the ultimate luxury. Tech must be heard and experienced—but not seen.

Today, we are still basking in the pleasurable memories of this week’s “Greatest Summer Social on Earth.” On July 25th, the New York Design Coalition delivered on that promise for all members of the design community at the lovely Samsung837 Experience Center downtown.
The day began with an NKBA-hosted Design + Tech Summit MCed by Steve Greenberg, the Gadget Guy, and our own Susie Williford, Chief Strategy Officer for NKBA. We enjoyed informative panel discussions about the intersection of interior design and home technology, how to learn about it and deliver it to our clientele, too. We were given a personal tour of the design center by Samsung personnel and got some hands-on experience with the amazing products there. Our hosts even provided lunch!
At the end of the day, there was a short break while the space was flipped into an amazing party venue, and the membership poured in to experience a fabulous evening of food, music, and entertainment along with the always

welcome opportunity to catch up with old and new friends.
A boatload of gratitude to the committee from each of the organizations for all of their hard work in pulling this together for us:
• NKBA Manhattan
• ASID New York
• IFDA New York
• DLFNY
• IDS New York
This year’s event truly WAS the Greatest Summer Social on Earth!
The chapter will be taking a break in August, but we’ll be bringing you back in September with a new array of terrific programming. In September, we are planning a special day of learning at Monogram’s new installation, travel to be provided, and October brings yet another amazing day of events at the A&D Building. Both days are part of continuing collaboration with NKBA National. You don’t want to miss either one! November will bring yet another special trip to Signature Kitchen Suite. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page and in this newsletter for more details in the coming weeks. There is still time to get on board with us and be a part of all of the fun for the fall season!
As always, you can reach out to Membership Chair, Jeannine Price. She’s always happy to assist in getting you started!

26 YEARS AGO ON THIS DATE: AUGUST 17, 1997
By Mark Rosenhaus— In 1997, interior designer Colette Whitney, of Whitney Interiors, and a few determined colleagues began organizing what would eventually become the Manhattan Chapter of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). At that time, individual members, businesses, CKDs, and CBDs (the only appellations at that time) belonged to the Metro New York Chapter. Most of its large membership was located on Long Island, New York.
Click here to read our Mission Statement and meeting notice from April 17, 1997.
To attend meetings, Manhattanites needed to endure heavy rush hour traffic, often several hours, and pay for dinner. For fast-paced city people, this was untenable. All the necessary facilities are right here in Manhattan, was the battle call.
We petitioned the NKBA. Metro, understandably, did not want to lose members. We insisted. We persisted. We are New Yorkers. We don’t take NO for an answer. We negotiated!
| | |
Metro would retain the boroughs of Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. We would be Manhattan only. The NKBA and Metro reluctantly finally relented.
Our first volunteer officers included President Colette Whitney, Nancy Mullan, Sue Kasten, Ann Morris, Mark Rosenhaus, Michael K. Storms, Reeva Locker, Lisa Lipsky, and David Linzer. We penned a Mission Statement. Success came on April 17, 1997, and the Manhattan NKBA Sub-Chapter's first official meeting took place at B&B Italia showroom, in the iconic NYC A&D Building.

HOLIDAY HOUSE HAMPTONS
279 Mitchell Lane Bridgehampton, NY 11932
By Sandra Singh— On July 9th, I was delighted to attend the Holiday House Hamptons Opening Night White Party. I was gracefully greeted by founder and interior designer Iris Dankner (pictured, left, with me). The home is 9,000 square feet. Artists including Iris Dankner, Anahi DeCanio, and 20 of our industry’s top interior designers, including Barbara Ostrom, Kim Radovich, Melanie Roy, and Amy Storm, transformed this space into cutting-edge decor and lifestyle concepts.
While viewing the home office/study designed by Barbara Ostrom, she told me about her inspiration: “Wouldn't it be nice if I had this room, a whimsical fantasy room, and the song, ‘By the Sea, By the Sea, By the Beautiful Sea’ kept going through my head.” The room’s ceiling sky mural was transportive. From appointing my favorite room, furniture, or accent pieces, the visit indeed sparked my imagination.
The showhouse is open through August 27th. For details and tickets, click here.

WELL-DESIGNED | A WELLNESS ORGANIZATION FOR DESIGNERS
By Rose Ott — Recently I had the pleasure of spending a day in the incredible, well-designed workshop created by Caleb Anderson and DeAndre DeVane, who acknowledge “designer life can be hard.” The workshop was hosted in the gorgeous showrooms of our sponsors Fisher + Paykel and Cosentino, and was designed to bring wellness to design leaders through six key components: move, learn, nourish, create, smell, and sound.
We began in the MOVE component, challenging us to go inward through gentle movement, which was grounding and intentional.
The second component, LEARN, allowed us to expand our knowledge and gain new insights. We were challenged to think deeply and critically about our work and our lives, which was both enlightening and inspiring.
The NOURISH component focused on feeding our bodies with healthy and delicious food, which helped us feel grounded and well-cared for.
The CREATE component encouraged us to tap into our creative sides and explore new ways of expressing ourselves. This was a great opportunity to take risks and try new things.
The SMELL and SOUND components were particularly powerful. We were able to experience the transformative power of scent through aromatherapy and the soothing power of sound through music and meditation.
Overall, the workshop was a holistic and transformative experience that challenged us in our bodies, minds, and spirits. I feel truly grateful to have been a part of it, and I know that I will
carry the lessons and insights I gained with me for a long time to come.
