What a fabulous location for the “City Lights-City Nights”, the New York Design Coalition’s Summer Social 2025. Between the glorious views, dynamic ceiling, smoking drinks, and unending room for 300+ guests to enjoy it all, it was indeed a top floor and top shelf venue, courtesy of Acuity Brands. Your name says it all! Thank you, Acuity!

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
Welcome to the dog days of summer—when iced coffee becomes a food group, the sidewalks shimmer, and even the most ambitious among us are tempted to trade our calendars for cabana time. While the term might conjure images of sunbathing pups (and let’s face it, we’ve earned that visual), its roots are celestial. Ancient stargazers named this sultry stretch after Sirius, the “Dog Star,” which rises with the sun in late summer. It’s hot, it’s hazy, and it’s the perfect time to kick back… just long enough to gear up.
For our NKBA Manhattan-NYC Chapter, this time of year is anything but lazy. August is when we gather for our annual Board Dinner, a special evening to honor our stellar volunteers and loyal sponsors—those who make our programs possible month after month. It's our heartfelt (and delicious) way of saying thank you.
It’s also the month we get all our ducks (and dogs) in a row for our biggest event of the year—Education & Membership Day—coming up on October 16th at the A&D Buildingon 58th Street. This 4th annual EduDay celebrates Kitchen & Bath Month and the grand finale of our 25th anniversary year. Expect CEUs, networking, a keynote luncheon, and an evening cocktail bash you won’t want to miss. Open to all design-build professionals, this event is also our semi-annual membership drive—sign up between August 15th and October 16th, and you’ll be entered to win the Franz Viegener Raffle Prize, a Harry Winston–worthy jewel for your kitchen or bath.
As smart homes evolve into energy-efficient ecosystems, the kitchen is now the brain of the home, and our industry needs to be in sync with tech integrators. That’s why we’re proud to support CEDIA Expo: a space where our industries meet, collaborate, and shape the future of intelligent, beautiful living.
Summer Slowdown… Kind Of
As we enjoy some well-earned vacation time—whether you're poolside, “down the shore,” or venturing farther afield—don’t miss my latest piece: “Confessions of a Reluctant Reader: 12 Books I Didn’t Expect to Like (But Might Actually Read).” Spoiler alert: Unless a book involves SEO trends or smart home integration, it rarely ends up on my nightstand.
Proof that even top dogs know when it’s time to float and when it’s time to hustle—EduDay prep starts now!
Mark Your Calendar
While you're unwinding, take a moment to check our chapter calendar and plan ahead for August and the fall season. This month’s newsletter features an insightful article from Ellen Lopez, “The Power of Certification: What It Means to Be a Certified Designer,”—a must-read for our emerging professionals.
CEU Webinars: “Check This Out” column, trending virtual workshops from NKBA National
Community in Action
Also in this issue: our Newsletter team has put together a collection of our members' memorable moments with a photo recap of our chapter’s participation in the NY Design Coalition’s Summer Social—images captured by our photographer/ videographer, Jeff Siegel. We’re proud to share that the event raised a generous donation for Nazareth Housing, a nonprofit supporting families in crisis.
And a Special Welcome to Our New Sponsors
Our sponsors are the backbone of this chapter, and we are deeply grateful for their support, innovation, and partnership. Please join us in warmly welcoming: Houzz, The Galley, andFabuwood—we’re thrilled to have you in our community.
Community Starts With You — Be Part of What’s Next
If you’ve ever thought about getting more involved, now is the time. Volunteering is one of the most impactful ways to connect—not just with the chapter, but with a community that thrives on shared purpose. Whether you're helping at an event, lending your voice to the newsletter, or joining a committee, your involvement makes a real difference.
In times of uncertainty and rapid change, community becomes more than a network—it becomes a lifeline. Volunteering transforms your membership into a meaningful partnership, strengthening your professional ties, opening unexpected doors, and supporting both personal and business growth in lasting ways. Reach out to any of our subcommittee chairs and find the space where your voice, your time, and your talents matter most.
Summer’s Not Over, But We’re Already Thinking EduDay
As we ride out the last stretch of summer (with SPF in one hand and a to-do list in the other), let’s not forget what makes this chapter so special—you. Whether you're floating through August or already sketching out fall plans, we hope this newsletter leaves you feeling inspired, connected, and maybe even a little more ready for what’s next. Big thanks to our members, sponsors, and volunteers—because without you, we’d just be a bunch of design-build professionals talking to ourselves. See you at EduDay!
Wishing you cool drinks, bold ideas, and a smooth transition into fall.

The Power of Certification:
What It Means to Be a Certified Designer
By Ellen Lopez
Becoming a certified designer through the NKBA is more than a professional milestone—it’s a declaration of commitment to excellence, integrity, and communication in the world of kitchen and bath design. For me, certification is not just a title, but a responsibility and a privilege that elevates both my work and the trust clients and colleagues place in me.
Elevating the Standard
Certification distinguishes a designer in a crowded field. It signals to clients, tradespeople, and manufacturers that you have met rigorous standards of knowledge, ethics, and technical skill. It is a mark of credibility that opens doors to higher-level projects and deeper collaborations with industry professionals. When I introduce myself as a certified designer, I’m not just sharing a credential, I’m offering assurance that every decision I make is grounded in best practices and a deep understanding of the craft.
The Language of Drawings
One of the most powerful tools in a certified designer’s toolkit is the ability to produce professional-level drawings that follow NKBA graphic standards. This means that every line, symbol, and note has a purpose.
These are not just pretty pictures, they are precise, intentional documents that communicate critical information to trades and factories. These drawings represent a universal design language that translates design intent into actionable steps, ensuring that what’s envisioned is what’s built. Whether it’s a cabinet shop, a countertop fabricator, or an electrician, everyone benefits from clear, standardized drawings that eliminate guesswork and reduce costly errors. It’s about clarity, consistency, and respect for the professionals who bring our designs to life.
A Commitment to Communication
At its core, certification is about communication. It’s about bridging the gap between creativity and construction, between vision and execution. It’s about being a reliable partner in a complex process that involves many hands and moving parts. As a certified designer, I see myself as a translator—turning ideas into plans, and plans into reality.
Looking Ahead
Being a certified designer is a journey, not a destination. It’s a commitment to lifelong learning, to staying current with codes, materials, and technologies. It’s about mentoring others, contributing to the profession, and always striving to raise the bar. To my fellow designers, whether you’re newly certified or considering the path—I encourage you to embrace the power of certification. It’s more than a credential. It’s a calling.

12 Books I Didn’t Expect to Like (But Might Actually Read):
A Summer List Worth Opening
Confessions of a Reluctant Reader–
By Charlé-John
Not being a card-carrying member of the “leisure reader” club, you can probably guess how I usually react to book lists. Somewhere between a polite eye-roll and a desperate scroll for the “10-second takeaway.” I don’t read fiction (I’ll admit to some science fiction), I don’t care about the latest literary darling. Unless there’s a plot twist involving SEO (search engine optimization) trends or breakthroughs in smart home tech, I’m generally not reaching for the bookshelf.
So, imagine my shock when I stumbled upon Salone del Mobile Milano’s 2025 Summer Book List and… didn’t hate it. In fact, I might have gotten a little excited. (I know. I was concerned, too.)
I was innocently browsing for the latest Salone 2026 intel when—BAM—a headline caught my eye: 12 Books. For discovering and pondering. And new possible worlds. I braced myself for the usual list of dusty, soul-searching tomes with names like “Leaves of Dust” or “The Lavender of My Regret.” Instead? I found a wildly compelling, on-point mix of design, architecture, sustainability, and creativity, all through a lens that felt personal to our industry.
Let’s start with my architectural fanboy moment:
“House of Dr. Koolhaas”, by Françoise Fromonot, is part of a series that treats buildings like crime scenes, wrapped in noir-style gumshoe narration. Think Raymond Chandler meets Rem Koolhaas. Sign me up. As a BBC/BritBox detective junkie, this scratched a very specific itch I didn’t know books could.
Then came “Design as an Attitude” by Alice Rawsthorn — equal parts design theory and rallying cry for creative minds. A title after my own heart.
Another gem: “Not Here, Not Now,” co-authored by Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby, professors at Parsons/The New School right here in NYC. It dares us to think differently about the possible, and how design responds to crisis and change. Sound familiar?
I haven’t even gotten to the brain-melting stuff, like:
“Architettura Open Source Reloaded", by Carlo Ratti with Matthew Claudel, Einaudi — A made-up conversation between a mathematician-turned-architect and a designer-turned-engineer, with a bit of help from AI. If that isn’t a fever dream I’ve had, I don’t know what is.
“Circular Materials,” by Joe Gibbs, Gestalten — 50 case studies on prioritizing environmental impact without sacrificing innovation. Finally, sustainability not dressed up in buzzwords, but backed by real-world design examples.
And the curveball that won me over on the title alone:
“Down Under: The Curious Fall of a Child Who Knew Nothing and Became Everything” by the design studio Formafantasma. Part fairy tale, part eco-manifesto, part adult science lesson — it dares to teach us to treat post-industrial spaces not as wastelands, but as living ecosystems. And there is more fascinating information about these reads here.
Look, I’m not saying I’ve officially become a “reader.” But this list might have cracked the code. There’s something here for the intellectually curious, the creatively blocked, the sustainability-minded, and even the book-adverse. So, if you catch me poolside this summer, don’t be surprised if I’m flipping through pages instead of Instagram. (Well, maybe alternating.)
Enjoy your summer. Feed your brain. And who knows? One of these books might just inspire your next big idea.
