NKBA MANHATTAN–NYC IN THE NEWS
Our EduDay & 60th Anniversary appeared on the homepage of National's website for quite a few days—
you can check if it's still there by clicking here.
By Elisa Fernández-Arias -- NKBA’s Manhattan Chapter hosted its second annual Education Day at the A&D Building in New York City, followed by a 60th Anniversary Event after-party at Dacor’s showroom. The day-long event featured expert panels and discussions as well as a special keynote by NKBA CEO Bill Darcy.

In New Jersey, we were warmly welcomed by Donille Perrone, Senior Brand Marketing Manager for Signature Kitchen Suite/ LG, and Helen Cho, Sr Director of Marketing, SKS & LG Pro Builder. Donille and Helen shared highlights of the LEED Platinum campus by HOK with Turner Construction. The building has spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline and cutting-edge touches everywhere—like bird-resistant glass throughout the facility.
Attendees learned about HOK’s collaboration with LG’s leaders and local conservation groups to respect the environment by blending the 350,000-square-foot building into the landscape. The horizontal “ground-scraper” is 1,300 feet long—equivalent to a 120-story office tower, the equivalent of the Chrysler Building on its side. A feng shui master guided the design team in orienting the building to the southeast. Sixty thousand square feet of LG solar panels on the western halves of each office wing and above the parking garage generate 30 percent of the electricity used on the site.
| |
We also toured the LG Inspiration Lab and checked out an OLED Aquarium that creates the virtual experience of walking beneath the sea; a TV studio for a behind-the-scenes look into how technology has transformed video production, and other learning stations. The LG Inspiration Lab is also open to schools and other groups in the community that wish to visit by appointment.
The rest of the evening was spent exploring Signature Kitchen Suite’s new Skyline Showroom, socializing, and enjoying the hospitality of our hosts. The SKS “True to Food” experience included enormous charcuterie boards prepared by SKS Executive Chefs, as well as other assorted bites plus wine and chocolate pairings. At the end of the evening, multiple prizes were raffled off, including Western-style hats. It was a Chapter Meeting to remember!

SPOTLIGHT ON JAMIE KEEL
I have been interested in interior design for many years. Although I work with design through a manufacturer, Cambria, I am always intrigued by the use of fabrics, stone, a multitude of materials, and seeing the final results. I have been in the design industry for 5-plus years, currently with Cambria and previously premium audio and video with Magnolia.
My day-to-day is filled with meeting residential and commercial designers, kitchen and bath showrooms, architects, and many more industry partners. This includes in-person presentations, sample fulfillment, discussing new design launches, learning lunches, discussing Cambria, and networking with so many amazing people.
Meeting new people day in and day out. There are so many awesome members in the design community with different backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge; you can learn so much from each person you meet and are lucky enough to have a conversation with.
Jamie is set to take over as NKBA Manhattan Chapter Communication Chair in 2024
I love being part of a team, and a team player. I have served on the NKBA Council since August 2022, and once I heard NKBA Manhattan would have a board opening for Communications, I could not pass up the opportunity. Communication is truly the heart and soul of any organization. I'm excited to work with this Board of Directors, our chapter sponsors, and our extraordinary members. I look forward to getting to know new designers and industry partners and expanding my relationships with those I know.
When asked for a piece of advice, Jamie shared this
Always get comfortable by being uncomfortable! Never stop taking those chances in your professional or personal life. Once you start becoming experienced and feeling more comfortable, start taking on something new, continuing your growth personally and professionally.

As always, the seasons, months and the year fly by, while we are all busy living, working, and caring. And here we are in December once again. But as 2023 comes to a close, it’s with great pleasure that I look back over what NKBA Manhattan has accomplished this year for you, our members.
Just some quick thoughts come to mind:
- Our first simulcast chapter meeting from KBIS, broadcast from the Savant Smart Home overlooking the Las Vegas Strip.
- Other parties and events at the show for our members' enjoyment and education
- Our annual KBIS recap event with speaker Maria Stapperfenne
- An amazing Earth Day chapter meeting
- The Greatest Summer Social on Earth in July—a much-anticipated event cosponsored by all of our design community organizations that is for our members only
- Sponsor road trips with SKS, Monogram, NKBA National for our members
- Our 2nd annual Education Day in October
- Our Member’s Only Holiday party—an end of the year “thank you” for your support and participation throughout the year
And let’s not forget the monthly chapter meetings that always include fun, food, networking, and

education. We like to think that we truly balance all of these pillars as part of the quality engagement that we bring to you, our members and our community. As we move into 2024, more is planned to bring to our members when you are on board with us. More trips, more engagement, and truly top-quality opportunities for learning. Who said education can’t also be fun? And there is really nothing that compares to having a community of sharing professionals to help us in our businesses.
While I am handing off the reins of the Manhattan Chapter, I am staying in close contact as part of National Chapter Leadership for another two years. I plan to continue to see all of you at the Manhattan events, so I won’t be far away, as well as participating in the new year with many of you at KBIS, I hope, and more!
I’ll leave this note, as I often have done, with the reminder that there is no time like now to get involved with us in your membership application or your renewal. Remember that Jeannine Price, our Membership Chair, is still ready and willing to assist with either of them for you. Reach her at jeannineprice@gmail.com
It has been my honor to serve both the organization and you, our members.
Happy Holidays!
— Julie

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE FLASHBACK
March 1 2001 - Manhattan has been a full chapter for two years. However, since our inception, virtually all the Chapter's work has been handled by a few dedicated volunteers. Our continued success now depends on the participation of other members, not only at meetings but also as committee volunteers on our Executive Board.
This year's goals are:
- To increase public awareness of
- NKBA on a par with ASID.
- To double our membership.
- To establish a certified CKD/CBD Program at one of the design schools.
- To publish a monthly Newsletter.
We will be calling you to discuss how you could participate in running our Chapter. We look forward to working with you.
Colette Whitney, CKD, CBD
President
