| | WEGNER CABINETRY AND SKS HOST NKBA MANHATTAN AUGUST BOARD SOIREE |
By Diana Mosher -- One of the best parts of NKBA Manhattan membership is the friendships that are formed along the way! Many of these result from working together on committees, supporting the chapter in a sponsorship role, or stepping up to serve on the board or auxiliary council. On August 15, the NKBA Manhattan Chapter along with sponsors Wegner Cabinetry and Signature Kitchen Suite (SKS) hosted the 2024 Board Dinner to honor our sponsors and volunteers.
|
The annual tradition is by invitation only. It’s the Chapter’s way of saying thank you to sponsors and volunteers at all levels of service. NKBA Manhattan Programs Director Joan Ravasy planned every detail of the summer soiree and worked tirelessly with the teams at Wegner Cabinetry and SKS on this wonderful evening that we are all still talking about.
See more photos here!
The 2024 invitation featured a fun request for sparkling summer white attire. This ask created buzz during the weeks leading up to the event as NYC attendees, who wear mostly black even in the summer, compared notes on new outfits for the occasion.
The Annual Board Dinner was also an opportunity to introduce the candidates running for open board positions that start in January 2025. Tony Monteleone of Monteleone Consulting is nominated for Treasurer and Diana Mosher of Diana Mosher Associates is nominated for Membership Director. Thank you to the Nominating Committee led by Chair Barbara Haberman with Toni Sabatino and Maureen Klein for organizing this important aspect of Chapter business.
We began our evening at the Wegner Penthouse Showroom in Suite 1811 at the D&D Building for a brand experience that also included an extensive installation of SKS products. We enjoyed photos at the step and repeat, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, networking, and opening remarks from Chapter leaders who thanked all volunteers and sponsors for their very important contributions.
Then we headed downstairs to the D&D Building’s executive dining room with expansive Manhattan views where we joined SKS featured Chef Justin Cullimore for a private, gourmet seated dinner with Napa wines and Sunset Sweets. More conversation, socializing, and selfies were enjoyed by all at the longest table ever seen at an NKBA Manhattan gathering!
Chapter President Charle-John Cafiero also took the opportunity to announce upcoming events planned for the remainder of 2024 including the NKBA Manhattan Chapter EduDay on October 8 at the A&D Building. We’re looking forward to a full day of CEUs, a special AI panel/luncheon, and a closing cocktail party.
Also, we’ll be closing out 2024 in style on December XX when we celebrate the Chapter’s 25th Anniversary Party at Porcelanosa’s iconic Manhattan flagship building with views of the Flatiron Building. These are just two examples of what we have planned in the months ahead. If you're not already a member of NKBA Manhattan, now’s the time to join! If you’re already a member and would like to become more involved as a sponsor or volunteer, come check out one of our upcoming monthly board/auxiliary council meetings. They are open to all!

Autumn is upon us, and we’re ready to embrace everything this season brings! The golden leaves, that invigorating chill in the air, and the serene calm after a whirlwind summer. While the days might be getting shorter, we’re ready to illuminate your fall with an exciting lineup of events at NKBA NYC! So grab your calendar because you won’t want to miss a thing. (See events calendar in Newsletter.) On October 8th, our primer event of the year will be held again at the A&D Building in NYC.
Celebrate a Milestone at Our 25th Anniversary Education & Membership Day!
| |
We’ll honor our 25th Anniversary in grand style with our award-winning 3rd Annual Education & Membership Day (EduDay). It’s our biggest CEU gathering of the year, featuring five accredited sessions packed with inspiration and insights to help you stay at the forefront of our industry.
The day kicks off with a networking breakfast, where you can connect with top designers, industry pros, and thought leaders. After picking up your credentials, five CEU presentations are available; preregistration is encouraged—attend one or all! A highlight of the day is the Keynote Luncheon. And, of course, we’ll cap the day off with a celebratory Cocktail Reception to mark the day's success. Join us as we raise a glass to NKBA Manhattan-NYC’s quarter-century of excellence in the design community. Expect swag bags, exciting prizes, and plenty of surprises from our wonderful sponsors.
On a more somber note, we recently said goodbye to a beloved member of our chapter. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Beata Galdi, a long-time supporter and friend of our Chapter. Her family requested that the announcement be held until her relatives abroad were notified. You can read more in our IN MEMORIAM.

Before the EduDay event, we’re focusing on the next generation of design pros with a Student Day on Tuesday, October 1st. This event is an incredible opportunity for students to learn, network, and grow with industry veterans. Full details are in the newsletter, so spread the word!

The Lounge features celebrity speakers, trendsetting experts, and hands-on demos by world-class artisans and chefs. Whether you’re looking for inspiration, education, or just a break from the hustle and bustle of the market!
November’s Exciting Line-up of exceptional events begins just as you return from High Point. The NKBA Manhattan Inspire Awards will return to the Javits Center during BDNY on November 10th. Sponsored by aspire design and home magazine, our judges will award innovative products that inspire our kitchen and bath industry.
Then, on November 14th, join us at Thermador’s newly renovated showroom in the A&D Building for a special chapter celebration. Experience the stunning new space with the latest luxury kitchen technology while enjoying a fabulous evening.
CEDIA and NKBA are teaming up to host a groundbreaking event at the anticipated opening of the Crestron Showroom in the NY Design Center at 200 Lexington. Be among the first to explore Crestron’s cutting-edge new flagship location while indulging in delectable food, exquisite spirits, and exclusive product showcases. Our panel discussion will feature some of the brightest minds in the industry, and this is your chance to see CEDIA’s innovative smart home products up close.
We’re going out with a bang as we wrap up the year with A December to Remember. Join us at our exclusive 25th Anniversary Gala on December 11, 2024. Celebrate a night of glamor, joy, and reflection on the NKBA Manhattan-NYC Chapter’s incredible achievements in the past 25 years. Look for your exclusive email invitation to the Gala.
Last month, we continued our tradition of honoring our sponsors and volunteers at the annual board dinner. This year’s all-white soiree was hosted at the stunning new Wegner Fine Cabinetry PH Showroom, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Signature Kitchen Suite and Wegner. The evening was an exceptional celebration of our community, beautifully recapped by Diana Mosher with pics in the newsletter. We are also excited to announce the addition of two new sponsors, Lutron Electronics and Palazzani Home, to our chapter family. In this month’s Spotlight, Maureen Klein introduces us to European-trained long-time Chapter member and volunteer Joan Gibbs and her hidden talents—who knew!
Get ready to embrace the season, and we can’t wait to see you at these incredible events! Stay tuned for more updates on our social media platforms as we gear up for more exciting "fun-learning" events this fall. We encourage all members, whether in person or virtually, to consider joining our council and board committees. If you’re interested, please reach out to Rose, our treasurer.
Warm regards,
Charlé-John

Member Spotlight: Joan Gibbs
By Maureen Klein -- Flipping from finance to furnishings years ago was triggered when a chance conversation with an astrologist reminded Joan of her interest in social work and design. She recalled how as a child she spent hours drawing and tracing rooms in the Sears Roebuck catalog. Being a “military brat”, she grew up visiting chateaus and museums throughout Europe with her family. These experiences surely helped lay the foundation for her future career.
I was fascinated by your winding formal education path, you started with a music scholarship (piano) at Marymount College, then?
I moved to England where my parents were working and transferred to the University of Maryland (European Division). I especially liked my art history classes where after each classroom lecture, we would take field trips to the great London museums. After finally getting my BS in Sociology, I went on for my Masters in Sociology of Arts at the University of Leeds, England.
So next stop was a position in the art field?
Hardly, I returned to NYC and first worked with a Japanese market research company, then got hired by a brokerage research company, as their research librarian supporting the stock analysts. I wanted to learn about money!
Could you elaborate on that “lightbulbs going off” moment after your astrology revelation?
Yes, I immediately started applying for design positions and was hired by Transdesign, a Georgia based company that sold art to the hospitality industry and was expanding to the residential market and widening their product line. They gave excellent training for all the categories we handled— art work, floor coverings, drapery treatments, etc. as well as the art of selling.
What happened when Transdesign folded after your 9 years there?
Along with a few other displaced designers, we started a support collective- Decor & More, continued design work and pooled our resources to take booths at design expos. One of my clients asked me to design the interiors for a large model home for a new development in Somers, CT. As a new mother, I said sure, as long as I can bring along my 3-month old!
You also participated in two designer showhouses, tell us about them.
In 1998 I was invited to participate in the first African-American Design Showhouse.
The Harlem United Showhouse, HUSH as it was called, raised funds for the nonprofit Harlem United. Assigned the entry hall for this 1906 Beaux Arts townhouse, I wanted my space to set the tone for what people would experience. Being a research nerd, I found an antique collection of furniture made by significant African American furniture makers. I was able to incorporate these museum pieces in my design and the hallway was a hit, and even got me a mention in The NY Times design section.
A little later, at the The Madam CJ Walker Showhouse, in Westchester NY, I dedicated my bedroom to the African American jockeys, who were at that time, being acknowledged as the first American horse racing jockeys by the Kentucky Derby.
And now for many years you’ve worked for Home Depot, why the switch?
Jordan, my 3-month old side-kick was now in high school along with his brother Dyllon. My husband Derrick, a real estate attorney, was starting his own firm. The time was right to get established with a steady job with benefits. I aced an interview with the Westchester HD Expo Design Center and when that closed I moved to their flagship 59th Street store in the kitchen design department. HD gives terrific training and support. It is a great environment for both excellence and learning.
And when did you join NKBA?
After I began working at Home Depot, I knew NKBA was the organization to join if I wanted to become a better and more knowledgeable kitchen designer. As a result, I found fabulous ongoing training in all aspects of design; and with the Manhattan Chapter, incredible camaraderie, great designers, and a commitment to excellence, and exposure to the best showrooms and staff.
| | For the first ever African-American Design Showhouse, Joan incorporated an 1830’s daybed and two other items beautifully crafted by freeman furniture makers from the 1830’s. | |
The bedroom in Villa Lewro, the mansion of Madam CJ Walker (portrayed by Octavia Spencer in Self Made) was the space Joan selected for her Jockey-themed design.

IN MEMORIAM: LONG-TIME MANHATTAN CHAPTER MEMBER BEATA GALDI
It is with much sadness that we report the sudden illness and passing of long-time NKBA Manhattan Chapter member Beata Galdi. President of Beata Galdi Design, an award winning interior architecture firm, her projects ranged from residential to retail, and hospitality including restaurants, hospitals and hotels. Her approach was defined by manipulation of light, precise application of color and the careful selection of natural materials that elevate the beauty of the space.
A native of Poland, Beata received her degree in Interior Architecture at the Academy of Fine and Applied Arts, Krakow, Poland. Beata was a long standing member of our chapter and volunteered for many events including the 2019 NKBA Manhattan Healthy Kitchen Symposium. Beata was passionate about design, health and nutrition which made her a natural for healthy kitchen ideas relating to kitchen design for better living. She was a quiet and gentle soul but always ready for our NKBA adventures or to volunteer with the membership committee, check in or volunteer for swag bag stuffing. Always ready with a kind word, her energy will be missed. Rest in peace.

NKBA ANNOUNCES CHANGES
BETHLEHEM, PA — The National Kitchen & Bath Association has made several key changes to its organizational structure, parting company with two of the most visible members of its leadership team, including Suzie Williford, who served as chief global relations officer for the Bethlehem, PA-based trade association.
Aside from Williford, Pamela McNally, who served as senior VP of Marketing + Digital, is no longer with the association, according to Bill Darcy, global president and CEO of the NKBA, which is marking its 60th anniversary in 2024.
Heather Shannon, formerly director of brand marketing at Milwaukee-based appliance manufacturer Perlick, has been named senior v.p. of strategic growth, Darcy announced. Shannon, who has held numerous brand, public relations and marketing positions, assumed responsibilities for the NKBA’s “Global Connect” program, as well as for sponsorship and revenue growth, member relations and learning, said Darcy, adding that the position “will further define the importance” of the NKBA’s business development plans. The association’s new director of marketing is Crystal Watts, Darcy added.

SUB-ZERO GROUP FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES CHARITABLE PLEDGE
Kitchen & Bath Design News, Madison, WI — The Sub-Zero Group Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove appliance manufacturers, has pledged $1.2 million over the next two years to nonprofit partners that align with the foundation’s mission “to foster innovation in the food ecosystem through increasing access to quality foods and to invest in organizations that contribute to lifelong health,” the company announced.
Since its inception in 1997, the Madison, WI-based Sub-Zero Group Foundation has invested more than $4 million in local community organizations that “embody the core, family-driven values” of its parent company, Sub-Zero Group, Inc., corporate officials said. The focus areas of funding include juvenile diabetes, food security and community centers in Madison, WI and the greater Phoenix, AZ areas.

CAMBRIA DESIGNERS ASK, WOULDN’T IT BE COOL IF…
It’s not the sprawling kitchen one might expect, but Cambria’s Clovelly™ helps keep the room feeling bright when Chef Ludo enjoys the opportunity to cook outside the spotlight.
As one might expect in the home of a celebrated chef, special attention went to the kitchen. While relatively compact, the space has been expertly orchestrated to meet the needs of a culinary maestro. Since the area did not accommodate an island, the designers added a peninsula that provides needed additional work space. Plus, all-new, rift-cut oak cabinets offer plenty of storage.
“One of the most important considerations when designing Chef Ludo’s kitchen was choosing the appropriate surface for him to work on,” says project lead designer Melanie Hamel. Thus, the countertops—as well as the full-height backsplash and stove hood—are crafted from Clovelly. Its light, creamy color is warm yet crisp—with light veining dancing across it, adding visual interest. “Using Cambria means that the countertops, hood, and backsplash will have the durability necessary for a family that spends so much time making food and memories in the kitchen,” adds Hamel.
