FROM MILAN TO HIGH POINT: SUB-ZERO AND ASPIRE HOST A GLOBAL TRENDS UPDATE

By Diana Mosher -- On May 16, NKBA Manhattan members kicked off NYCxDESIGN at Sub-Zero’s showroom at the A&D Building. Besides great food, cocktails, and conversation, the chapter meeting featured a panel of well-traveled, award-winning designers returning from the hottest international design shows. Deborah L. Martin, the managing editor of aspire design and home Magazine and the editor-in-chief of Design NYC, moderated a conversation with Sergio Mercado, Principal of Sergio Mercado Design; Nancy Fire, Chief Inspiration Officer and Founder, Nancy Fire Designs; Felicitas Oefelein, Owner and Designer, F. O. Design; and Toni Sabatino, AKBD, Owner and Designer, Toni Sabatino Design.

Not all the products they saw will be available in the States right away (and some might never make it here at all), but attendance at Salone and EuroCucina is a must for inspiration and an important part of a well-rounded design education on how things are done in other parts of the world. In Milan, the kitchen concepts—and bathrooms, too—were merged into the rest of the residence with complementary textiles, soft seating, and artwork. Toni Sabatino was impressed by the quality of the millwork, clever storage solutions, and the integration of multiple functions in a fairly open plan with kitchen features that rolled into the living space. Another trend that has caught on everywhere is the integration of kitchen appliances throughout the residence, like an espresso bar or wine cooler in the bedroom or home office.

Europe has been at the forefront of induction cooking for a long time, and this success story can be shared with design clients in the States who are still on the fence about giving up gas. At EuroCucina, panelists also saw versatile appliances that switch between grilling, baking, steaming, and more to help minimize the kitchen real estate. Kitchen faucets also continue to evolve. Filtered water, regular water, sparkling water, mineral water, and hot water—everything comes from one tap.

Felicitas Oefelein was surprised to see so few freestanding bathtubs or jetted tubs in Milan—but she reports there were many phenomenal showerheads on display. The new breed of shower heads equipped with LED lights, lots of different settings, and new water-saving technology make it easier than ever to create a spa experience at home. Sergio Mercado, an early adopter of chromotherapy, is also excited about shower heads that integrate chromotherapy features so even more design clients can enjoy the benefits of healing spaces. Prefabricated sauna and steam room units were also attention-getting exhibits in Milan.

Certainly, the wellness lifestyle and sustainability go hand in hand, and they’re hot topics on both sides of the pond. Nancy Fire’s recent showroom tour during High Point Spring Market focused on substrates derived from organic substances like mycelium that can be returned to where they actually originated. European designers and manufacturers are still leading the way on circularity and cradle-to-grave processes, but U.S. designers are doing their best to get caught up. Thank you, Sub-Zero and aspire design and home magazine for hosting an excellent conversation!

WELCOME, JUNE! EMBRACE THE SUMMER AND CELEBRATE PRIDE

Every June ushers in the longest day of the year, the joys of summer vacation planning, and the vibrant celebration of NYC Pride Month, honoring the LGBTQ+ movement.

We are proud of our industry as a beacon of inclusivity and privileged to be part of an NKBA network of professionals who take pride in their work. In our homes, we uphold sustainability, wellness, and craftsmanship principles, reflecting our pride in excellence. Pride Month is a powerful reminder to embrace our identities and celebrate our achievements.

The LGBTQ+ community’s spotlight on pride is a testament to the authentic self-worth and respect we strive for. In tandem with Pride Month, we also celebrate Juneteenth, a federal holiday known as "Freedom Day." It symbolizes the ongoing fight for equality and justice and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. Both events emphasize the importance of pride, inclusivity, and human rights.

By celebrating Pride Month and Juneteenth, we pave the way for future generations where everyone can proudly be themselves, strengthening our communities for generations. Having our children grow up with the self-confidence to take pride in who they are and where they come from.

Concluding an Inspiring Month of Design Innovation

What a ride! We've just wrapped up an incredible month filled with design events that captivated our community. NYCxDesign Week was the crowning jewel, with the illustrious ICFF at its core. If you missed any of the action, don't worry—our AdHock Editor, Diana Mosher, covers all the highlights in this month’s newsletter.

NKBA Manhattan kicked things off in style with our May Chapter meeting, which featured a dynamic "International Trends Update" panel expertly moderated by “aspire design and homemanaging editor Deb Martin. The chapter meeting was graciously hosted by the Sub-Zero Wolf and Cove Showroom at the A&D building. It was an unforgettable start to a month full of inspiration and innovation!

But the excitement didn't stop there. Diane’s recap also captures our exhilarating excursion to AJ Madison, where another extraordinary panel moderated by “aspire design and home magazine continued to wow attendees. On ICFF opening day, we launched the NKBA Inspire Awards, sponsored by “aspire design and home, marking another high point of the month.

The ICFF Javits Center Main Stage was buzzing with energy as NKBA | KBIS SVP of Marketing + Digital, Pamela McNally, spoke on the latest industry technology trends. She later dazzled (as usual) with insights on luxury design at the Grohe booth. And who could forget the evening's grand finale—the luxurious Gessi Luxury Brand had its grand opening in the new SoHo-NYC showroom.

Throughout the city, design events were bursting with creativity and innovation. We focused on those most relevant to our industry this vibrant time offered. It was a month to remember, and we eagerly anticipate what comes next!

Congratulations go to NKBA Star Award-Winner Barbara Haberman! This month, we spotlight her exemplary contributions as Best Committee Member and her insightful views on the benefits of volunteerism. Known affectionately as "The Ambassador," Barbara tirelessly promotes our chapter. Kudos to Barbara on this well-deserved NKBA honor!

AJMADISON, ASPIRE, TRUE RESIDENTIAL AND CAMBRIA HOST SPECIAL EVENTS DURING NYCXDESIGN

By Diana Mosher -- NKBA Manhattan members enjoyed a multi-faceted Experience Day on May 23 at AjMadison’s Brooklyn showroom. The event was hosted by AjMadison in partnership with aspire design and home magazine and NYCxDESIGN. The day started at the A&D Building with early morning networking and luxury bus transportation to AjMadison’s Brooklyn headquarters. The program included a luncheon and craft cocktail pairings followed by a VIP tour of the showroom and an overview of AjMadison’s Pro program for designers.

Experience Day also showcased talented NYC artisans whose work was displayed throughout AjMadison’s showroom. The Brooklyn Maker Pop-Up included products by MUD, Grow House Grow, Brooklyn Roasting Company, Shakuff Lighting, Vallnez Mozell, Jane Pollak, and DMC Original Art

Before heading back to Manhattan, NKBA members enjoyed a keynote presentation and CEU panel, “Unpacking Unpopular Opinions: Upholding or Outsmarting Design Industry Trends,” moderated by Paul Hagen, Editor, aspire design & home with Leyden Lewis, Principal, Leyden Lewis Design; Erika Belsey Worth, Principal, Belsey & Mahla and Jessica P. Ball, Director, Trade Engagement & Education, AjMadison.

Trends come and go—and designers each have their own aesthetic—but successful design outcomes are about marrying client needs with the results of the decor according to panelist Leyden Lewis. Can you aim for timeless? Yes, says Erika Kelsey Worth, Co-Chair of the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse. Clients are influenced by trends and showing them the trends they want to see is part of the design process in any project. But, if you dig deeper into the client’s needs and visual preferences, you can get beyond the trends.

One of the trends everyone is talking about these days is luxury. There are many definitions, but panelist Jessica Ball views luxury as personalization which can be done in various ways such as colorful appliances, unusual hardware choices or panel ready options. Appliances can be beautiful and can elevate the look of the kitchen. That said, a range hood can make or break a kitchen design. The panelists agreed you can’t go wrong with the classic all-white kitchen. But, white and beige can also be seen as a response to the fear of being judged—or the fear of commitment. Don’t be afraid to show clients bold options that might give them pleasure and generate a sense of empowerment.

Experience Day at AjMadison ended with an artful dessert station, more opportunities to peruse the Brooklyn Maker Fair, and a farewell toast. Then it was time to board the luxury bus back to the A&D Building for a lively cocktail party at True Residential’s showroom with co-host Cambria. NKBA members enjoyed one of the industry’s largest charcuterie boards—curated and assembled by the True Residential team—along with music and a great way to unwind and celebrate the conclusion of NYCxDESIGN 2024!

If you missed Experience Day at AjMadison or the closing cocktail party hosted by True Residential and Cambria, you can catch all the fun by watching our event coverage in the video above..

BARBARA HABERMAN - VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD

By Diana Mosher -- The NKBA Manhattan Chapter is known for its welcoming vibe at monthly chapter meetings and other events of interest around town. One of the friendly faces that helps newcomers and long-time members feel at ease belongs to Barbara Haberman, a Chapter member since August 2016.

Barbara works at Bloomingdale’s 59th Street in the flagship Home Store where she specializes in fashions for the home—tabletop, luxury goods, housewares, home furnishings and décor, bedding and bath, and small appliances. “I love coordinating and helping clients achieve their look,” she says. “I like that I have the opportunity to use what I learn through my involvement in the design community and incorporate it into conversations with my clients. I also work with interior designers and architects through our designer trade program.”

Barbara rarely misses an NKBA event, and she’s always working behind the scenes with Chapter leadership to help ensure everything runs smoothly. Her efforts as a member of the NKBA Manhattan Auxiliary Council were recognized earlier this year at a special event hosted by NKBA National during KBIS 2023. We recently caught up with Barbara to discuss volunteerism, her Star Award, and more. Read our Q&A.

Congratulations on your Star Award for Best Committee Member!

Thank you! It was an amazing honor to win the Star Award for Best Committee Member and a great way to start KBIS.

How long have you been volunteering for KBIS Manhattan Chapter? What rewards do you get from volunteering?

I’ve been volunteering for our NKBA Manhattan Chapter for eight years

Volunteering can open up many doors and opportunities. Sometimes it’s a learning experience, sometimes you’re offering your talents, passion and expertise towards a goal. It takes you beyond being a member of the organization.

How long have you been a member of the NKBA Manhattan Chapter?

I’ve been a member since August 2016. It was a highlight of that summer! I was already involved in the NYC design community. I met members of NKBA Manhattan around town and at various events. Kent Brasloff was Chapter President then, and I had met Toni Sabatino too. I enjoyed attending chapter meetings, learning, and networking with the people I met. It was exciting to expand my interior design interests to incorporate kitchen and bath. I got involved as a volunteer soon after joining.

It was exciting to expand my interior design interests to incorporate kitchen and bath. I have an eye for décor and design and have always been a design enthusiast. The kitchen and bath are the heart of the home, where we spend so much of our valuable time. When I joined the NKBA and our Manhattan chapter.

Tell us about your professional journey—have there been twists and turns?

I grew up in the suburbs of Long Island, NY. It was always fashion, never a doubt… fashion, style, decorating, and never enough magazines. That has always been my passion. I went to college for business admin/marketing and then landed in NYC at the Fashion Institute of Technology for buying and merchandising. It was a straight path to Seventh Avenue, aka Fashion Avenue, and then on to menswear. There have been some unexpected turns, for sure. Flower design at 1-800-Flowers, Newsday, Avon, baby products and furniture, jewelry, and clothing at Banana Republic, then on to home goods and furnishings, Pier 1 Imports, all of which led me to the Home Store at Bloomingdale’s.

What advice do you have for emerging professionals?

Get involved! It can certainly help you make connections. Find organizations and events that interest you—even if they are not in your field—talk to people and network. Help out wherever you can at your job and at extracurricular activities.

EXPLORE, CELEBRATE, AND PRESERVE LGBTQ HISTORY THIS PRIDE MONTH

Nowhere is richer in LGBTQ+ history than the NYC neighborhoods of Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo. And no one does more to share and celebrate that history than Village Preservation. But all the NYC boroughs are celebrating ‘Pride,’ and here is a list of what's happen’n in your neck of the woods. Read the article from @ Greenwich Village Society For Historic Preservation with the history of this movement in our great city.

LETTER FROM THE DESK OF GLOBAL PRESIDENT & CEO, BILL DARCY

Several announcements were recently made in the Bill Darcy, Global President & CEO’s monthly letter. Among them is that Suzie Williford, the Chief Global Relations Officer, has departed the Association. Suzie’s contributions and commitment to the NKBA over the past 12 years have been instrumental as a key member of the leadership team. Including induction into the Industry Hall of Fame in 2019. In her capacity as EVP and Chief Strategy Officer, Suzie was core to the Association’s growth by implementing the co-location of the NKBA industry trade show, KBIS, with NAHB and the International Builders Show, making it the largest industry trade event in North America; restructuring the Association's governance, championing the NKBA Global Connect business development initiative and concepting and creating the Women2Women mentoring program. And many more accomplishments too numerous to list here. She has touched our hearts at the NKBA Manhattan-NYC chapter, and we will sorely miss her. We wish her health and happiness.
