Composers Concordance Presents

The 11th Annual
CompCord Festival

–What’s In a Name?–

May 7th Through May 21st

Four eclectic concerts centered around the theme of 'names' and premiering the music of more than 50 composers at an array of NYC venues.

- Art by Sophie Dunér
For Immediate Release - New York, NY - From May 7th to May 21st, Composers Concordance presents its 11th annual festival, entitled ‘What’s In a Name?'. Four concert programs feature new music compositions inspired by names of fictitious characters, names that are dear to individual composers, and nicknames, plus a concert of 26 composers presented alphabetically, a trio of musicians named Jay, and other imaginative ways composers choose to play upon the event titles and festival theme. The concerts will be presented at an array of NYC venues, with numerous fun premieres, virtuoso performances, and an eclectic range of styles, presented in quick tandem, encouraging our favorite composers to play on the phenomenon of names.

May 7th at Kostabi World
Name Bands & Nicknames
This event features new music written for the The J's: Ensemble:
Jai Jeffryes - piano, Jay Rozen - tuba, Jay Elfenbein - electric viola da gamba.
Composers are invited to join the trio as performers and write music inspired by the theme.

May 13th at The Delancey
What's In a Name? - Shakespeare & His Characters
The CompCord Rock Ensemble takes the stage of a great NYC rock venue, and plays on names found in the writings of the Bard. Composers Concordance again cranks the volume and challenges composers to collaborate via its thematic programming.

May 18th at Gallery MC
A to Z Electronic
Twenty-six composers, in alphabetical order (first, middle or last names), present their short electronic music compositions. The event will be mostly electronic, with some electro-acoustic music presented as well.

May 21st at DROM
The 13th Annual Comp-Play-Comp Marathon: 'Name Dropping’
Showcasing more than twenty composer-performers inspired by the 'Name' theme. Since many of today’s composers are also great performers, CompCord again calls attention to composers' exceptional skills as interpreters of their own works.

The concerts will also be live-streamed on the Composers Concordance Facebook page.

Staying in rotation for 39 years in NYC is a rare feat. In the case of a new music presenting organization, it requires not only diligence and cognizance of achievements of the past but also an ethic of keeping one's ear to the ground for emerging stylistic and technological developments, as well as talented new composers on the scene. Composers Concordance, founded in 1984 by Joseph Pehrson and Patrick Hardish, advised by Otto Luening, strives to present contemporary music in innovative ways, with an emphasis on thematic programming. Directors Gene Pritsker and Dan Cooper co-curate the programs and lead the CompCord Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, String Orchestra, and Big Band. Associate Directors are Milica Paranosic, Peter Jarvis, Debra Kaye, and Seth Boustead. Composers Concordance has also created a Naxos-distributed record label: Composers Concordance Records, co-directed by Peter Jarvis. Composers Concordance's overriding vision is to promote contemporary music, composers, and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. Good music performed and recorded well, pushing the boundaries of sound and composition.

"Composers Concordance..a veritable New York new music institution of concerts, album production and multiple ensembles under a sweeping, tenacious brand, thriving on the emulsion of contemporary classical, free improv, jazz and rock, overt humor and fearless political statements, all very much in evidence..The ensemble..was masterful throughout.”- John Pietaro, The New York City Jazz Record

"An unwavering force in giving composers exposure through concert bookings and its own record label, the intrepid new-music organization Composers Concordance” - The Brooklyn Rail

"The Composers Concordance folks are unpredictable and at times refreshingly irreverent in a reverent sort of way....ingenious fun" - Classical-Modern Music Review

“Enterprising new music organization” - The New York Times
