UPCOMING

WORSHIP SERVICE

Sunday, February 11, 2024 - 10 am

In-Person & ZOOM

“All's Fair”

There is an old adage, "All's fair in love and war." But is that true? This adage seems to equate these two concepts, which should be diametrically opposed. During this service, Rev. Karyn Marsh will explore the connection between justice, equity, and love.

  • Rev. Karyn Bergmann Marsh, Guest Speaker
  • Jan Sprinkel, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician
  • Fantaye Kehm, Youth & Teen Welcome
  • Judy Graham, Greeter
  • Joy Kim, Coffee Host

Please CLICK HERE for the link to join us via Zoom.

PLEASE REMEMBER the FY'25 Pledge Drive Luncheon

and Presentation after today's service!

Welcoming Families and Children on Sunday Mornings

Upcoming Worship Services

Sunday, February 18 — In-Person & Zoom

"When Change Seems Impossible"

The world's challenges can seem overwhelming. Lawyer, author, and activist Bryan Stevenson reminds us that you can't understand most of the important things from a distance; you have to get close. At this service with Rev. Sue Browning we'll consider how his advice to "get close" is useful in our own lives and the broader quest for equity.

  • Rev. Sue Browning, Minister
  • Nancy Holland, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician

Sunday, February 25 — In-Person & Zoom

“Hello! Is Anyone Listening?”

How often are you in conversation with someone and suddenly you’re distracted? We all do it. In this service, Rev. John Wright will speak to the difference between “hearing” and “listening,” and its effect on communication and our relationships.

  • Rev. John Wright, Guest Speaker
  • Annie Lavin, Service Leader
  • Michael Casey, Musician

Scammers at it Again — Please Be Cautious!

This week someone sent an email to a UUCR congregant that appeared to be from me, but was from a fake email address that implied it was from your minister. This has happened before at UUCR, and happens regularly to ministers across the country. Please be extremely cautious and do not respond to ANY email or other communication that you are not absolutely sure is from me. If in doubt, directly reach out to me or to the office.

Rev. Sue's January Sermons —

Written Versions Available Online

In January, both of my sermons considered ways our faith might support us as we face the realities of divisions in our country and community in 2024. The texts of these sermons, "The Essence of Our Unitarian Universalist Faith" and "What is Collective Liberation?" are available on the links below. If these sermons spark reflections or ideas for further conversation, I'd love to hear from you.

Donations Needed

Our Annual Auction Evening!

Saturday, March 2, 6 pm at UUCR

Please help make our fundraising auction on March 2 even better by contributing homemade or purchased finger food to be enjoyed by attendees. Sweet and savory items are both welcome. Sign up on the bulletin board or by contacting Elisabeth Tully (elisabethtully@gmail.com).

And, we need more donations! Please send a description of what you would like to offer to Jane Hardy at janewhardy@gmail.com. N.B.: We cannot accept donations after, Sunday, February 25, to allow time to finalize our catalog and bid sheets.

To stimulate your thinking and interest, here is a Silent Auction donation along with three more Live Auction items:

Hegland Glass Studio named piece, with custom stand. “River’s Edge” is 4.5" x 17”. Artists’ (Dave and Patti Hegland) statement: “The piece was designed to provide a sense of motion within a tranquil environment. The pieces began with the creation of a complex “pattern bar” that forms the cream, powder blue, steel blue, green, and clear inclusions at the center of the piece. The steel blue surround intensifies the central flow design.” This piece was purchased 10 – 12 years ago; documentation included. Minimum bid TBD. Pam Cleary

Genealogical Research. Do you know who your great-great-grandparents were? A couple of hours of amateur genealogy might be fun and revealing. No guarantees, but who knows what might be uncovered? $40 minimum. Anne Brown

Afternoon Tea for Six, on Saturday, April 13 at 3 p.m., at the home of Nancy Holland. Enjoy a traditional British Afternoon Tea, featuring a selection of teas, tea sandwiches, and confections. Fascinators/bowler hats are optional. $15 minimum bid. Nancy Holland

Trip to the Baltimore Museum of Art, with Lunch at Gertrude's. Tour the museum's temporary and permanent art exhibitions and be my guest for lunch at Gertrude's Restaurant on the premises. Dates suggested: 4/17-4/19 and 4/24-4/26. Offer for up to three people, transportation provided. $35 minimum bid. Amy Warner

Got some of your own ideas for meals, excursions, services or special occasions you could offer? Have some questions? Or items for our Silent Auction? Please email Jane Hardy at janewhardy@gmail.comN.B.: We cannot accept donations after, Sunday, February 25, to allow time to finalize our catalog and bid sheets.

Be sure to click on the “Auction 2024” link at the top of the UUCR website, www.uuchesterriver.org, to see the latest catalog. Updates to the catalog will be made at least weekly as new items come in, so please keep checking back prior to the auction date.

Please mark your calendars for March 2 and be sure to join us for an evening of fun and fellowship.

Results of January's

Social Justice Committee Outreach

Thanks to the generosity of our members and friends, UUCR will make a $451.58 donation to the Baltimore Abortion Fund. We extend our sincere appreciation for donors' contributions to this organization that supports people's right to make their own reproductive health care decisions.

Medical Aid In Dying Legislation Help Needed

Medical Aid In Dying (MAID) legislation is being considered once again in the Maryland General Assembly this year. It's got a very good chance of passing if we get enough support. Lynn Dolinger, who now lives in Easton, is representing our "sister" congregation, UUFE, in efforts to advocate for this legislation with support from the UU Legislative Ministry. She's looking for a partner at UUCR to raise awareness and support. Please contact Lynn at lynn.thirdwish@gmail.com. The Maryland Legislature is only in session until April 9, so this is an urgent but short-lived assignment.

Tuesday, February 13 @ 7 PM
