BRING A FRIEND TO LLAIC
One of the strengths of LLAIC is that we are a very social and supportive organization. We like to be together, whether it is live or on Zoom. Many of us have made friends at LLAIC, but we also have friends who are not members. We would like to encourage you to bring your “outside” friends to any of our meetings, lectures, or on-line events, even classes (with the permission of the instructor). Since we like you, we’re sure we will like your friend too.

TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT LLAIC’s SPRING COURSES!
Maybe you'll find something new that you'd like to learn about!
We have many excellent mind-expanding courses beginning in April. You can engage with our wonderful course leader Sandy Sherizen on the important social consequences of technology, Tuesday mornings on Zoom; or discuss life’s transitions with Elise Phillips and other interested LLAIC members on Wednesday mornings, also on Zoom. Or on Thursday mornings examine “the good, the bad and the ugly” history of the British empire with history buff Margalit Lai and friends. What about short books/great reading with popular literature teacher Brooks Goddard? And you don’t need to speak French to enjoy the comedies of Moliere with our French course leader Dany Bick or study poetry with our humanities professor Fred Kolb, all on Zoom on Thursdays.
If you’d prefer to meet in person, you can join the play-reading group on Tuesday afternoons for a fun time at no charge. Or you can examine and clarify your plans for the future with hospice volunteer Peter Goldberg, also in person on Tuesday afternoons. Both classes will follow our reinvigorated LUNCH@LLAIC program at noon where you will enjoy lunch with friends followed by a stimulating and thought-provoking program. LLAIC’s Tuesdays in spring will be a return to glorious pre-pandemic days!
So now Is the time to read the full course descriptions on the website and pick one or two spring term courses for April and May!

PLEASE JOIN LLAIC LOVES ART
ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13 AT 1:30
FOR A PHOENIX ART MUSEUM PRESENTATION AND CONVERSATION:
"APOSTLES OF UGLINESS"
WITH MASTER DOCENT IRIS CASHDAN-FISHMAN
(A CHANGE IN THE PROGRAM)
| | |
What if someone called your paintings ugly?
What would you think if an artist was referred to as an “Apostle of Ugliness” or an “Ash Can Artist”? At the turn of the 20th Century, a group of painters were called these names. New ideas are always difficult to accept. This was definitely part of the problem. Learn why these artists were not the least bit upset by name-calling, who called them by those names, and why those titles were used. You will be able to judge for yourself if this new standard of beauty was justified.
Iris Cashdan-Fishman was born in New York City, and joined the Phoenix Art Museum in 1974. She left to go back to education and acquire three master's degrees before returning to PAM in 2000. She has been touring ever since and loves every minute of it.
Click here before noon on Tuesday, March 12, to request a Zoom invitation. You'll receive it that day.

PAUL S. RUSSELL, M.D.
MUSEUM OF MEDICAL HISTORY AND INNOVATION
FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 2024 @ 11:00
2 NORTH GROVE STREET, BOSTON
LUNCH AT HARVARD GARDENS, BOSTON
Please join us at 11:00 for a docent tour of the Russell Museum of Medical History and Innovation and the Ether Dome at Massachusetts General Hospital. We will be viewing interactive media displays, artifacts and photographs, learn about the hospital’s important contributions to the medical field, and see how these discoveries and advancements have shaped the present and how they will continue to impact the future of medicine. Under the Ether Dome at the top of the building, we will see the first operating theater and first use of ether as a surgical anesthetic.
After this interesting experience, we will have lunch at Harvard Gardens at 1:00, directly across the street from the museum. We will order from the complete menu and receive individual checks. Michelle and Beverly enjoyed their delicious lunch at this restaurant.
PLEASE NOTE: Parking is NOT allowed in the MGH parking lot. A strong recommendation is to form a carpool and use SpotHero for parking or use Lyft. Should you choose to use public transportation, the closest stop is Charles/MGH on the Red Line. NOTE: Alewife station fills up quickly (usually by 9:00 AM) so you may want to take the commuter rail to South Station and then the Red line to Charles/MGH. There is an elevator at the museum to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers and there are restrooms in the museum and the Ether Dome.
To register, send a copy of this form, with a check for $5 made out to Beverly Blatz, to Beverly at the address listed on the form. About a week prior to the event, you will receive an email with contact information for members signed up for this trip. This will enable you to form carpools if you wish. If you do not want to carpool, please let us know and we will omit your town from the list.
We look forward to seeing you on March 29.

HUNTINGTON THEATER - TONI STONE
SATURDAY, JUNE 1 - MATINEE
WAITLIST ONLY!
Given that we had such a successful theater trip to Huntington in December, the dinner theater committee has planned one for June and has a waitlist already! We have a limited number of terrific center orchestra seats for the Saturday matinee on June 1st to see Toni Stone.
Here is the synopsis from the theater: “Toni Stone is an ace ballplayer who knows her stats, plus she’s got a great arm. Rejected by the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League because of her race, she becomes the first woman to play professional baseball on a man’s team in the Negro Leagues, shattering expectations and creating her own set of rules. Filled with humor and the love of the game, Huntington favorite Lydia R. Diamond knocks it out of the park with this beautiful, rich portrait of a trailblazing woman.”
If you are a current LLAIC member who has submitted an HCMI form to the Huntington, you are entitled to $20 tickets. If you would like to join the waitlist, please contact Shelly Levine and she will offer another possible way to join the group.

MOVIE MAVENS
CHINATOWN
FRIDAY, MARCH 15 @ 2 P.M.
| | |
The Movie Mavens selection for March is Chinatown, a 1974 film directed by Roman Polanski, written by Robert Towne, and starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston. Themes of ruthless ambition, family secrets, and political corruption converge under a mystery of cultural intersections in 1930’s Los Angeles.
The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, losing the Best Picture Oscar to The Godfather Part Two, and winning only for Towne’s screenplay which is loosely based on true events. It has received a 99% rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics and a 93% audience score. It is considered by many critics to be one of the major ‘neo noir’ thrillers ever made, in the company of The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep.
This film is available on Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, and Apple TV. We will watch it on our own and gather together on Zoom at 2:00 p.m. on March 15 for a lively discussion. Click here by noon on Thursday, March 14 for your Zoom invitation which will be sent that day.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is an 1845 memoir and treatise on abolition written by famous orator and former slave Frederick Douglass during his time in Lynn, Massachusetts. In factual detail, the text describes the events of his life and is considered to be one of the most influential pieces of literature to fuel the abolitionist movement of the early 19th century in the United States.
