Celebrating True Philanthropy:
Honoring Dick and Nancy Burns as Pardee Hospital Foundation's Exemplary Supporters
Ahead of our 2024 Philanthropist of the Year honorees being announced later this summer, our Foundation is reflecting on what it means to be a true giver of self, someone devoted to making life better for other people. Invariably, that leads us to think about Dick and Nancy Burns, our 2023 honorees.
Greek playwright Aeschylus coined the term philanthropy in the 5th century to mean “love of humanity.” Today, philanthropy means generosity in all its forms and is often defined as giving gifts of “time, talent, and treasure” to improve the lives of others.
Viewed through that lens, it embodies Dick and Nancy. Former Foundation Board Chair and current board member Marilyn Gordon characterized them as humble, kind, and authentic.
“They are doers,” she said. They are a powerful part of our UNC Health Pardee community who give selfless gifts of time, talent, and treasure.”
In addition to being generous donors to the Foundation, the Burns have greeted patients and families at the hospital’s information desk, helped as trained “transporters” assisting patients to their cars after appointments, and they have supported those receiving treatment at Pardee’s Cancer Center. Dick and Nancy were also integral to Pardee’s early work to expand cardiac services as members of the cardiac committee.
As we come together on June 21st to honor the 2024 Physician of the Year and Philanthropist of the Year during the Summer Soiree event, may we all be inspired to follow Dick and Nancy's example and continue to support the Pardee Hospital Foundation in its mission to enhance healthcare and uplift lives.

A Heartfelt Journey:
Finding Solace in the Doctor-Patient Relationship
GRATEFUL PATIENTS: VALERIE A. HOFFMAN
Moments of vulnerability in life's unpredictable journey often lead us to appreciate the significance of genuine human connection. For me, this realization came sharply into focus during a recent heart scare.
As I grappled with the uncertainty and anxiety of potential heart issues, I found myself not only in need of medical expertise but also longing for compassionate care and understanding.
I sought a doctor who would possess exceptional skills but also take the time to listen to my concerns, treat me as an individual, and provide reassurance during an anxious time.
Enter Cardiologist Dr. Marian Taylor with Pardee Cardiology Associates. From the moment she entered the exam room, I knew I was in capable hands. Combined with her great skill and experience, Dr. Taylor's warmth, patience, and genuine interest in my well-being immediately put me at ease. She didn't rush through our time together or treat me like another name on her schedule. Instead, she took the time to truly listen, address my concerns, review all of my recent test results, and clearly convey all of my options.
Thankfully, my heart issues turned out to be minor. However, the impact of Dr. Taylor's care went far beyond just medical diagnosis. She provided me with needed answers, peace of mind, and a roadmap for implementing feasible lifestyle changes to support my heart health.
In essence, Dr. Taylor became, for me, the gold standard for what it means to have a meaningful "doctor-patient relationship." Along with those who administered my various tests along the way, her exemplary approach highlighted a profound yet simple truth:
Healthcare is indeed personal. I'm grateful that doctors like Marian Taylor understand that.
