Springtime in Fredericksburg. Join us.

April 10-12, 2023

Fredericksburg is a great place to enjoy quaint downtown with shopping, nearby wildflower views, awesome museums, excellent hiking opportunities and wine tasting, too. Stay tuned for our exact schedule and agenda of event, but for sure we will have a meal together on Monday and Tuesday evenings and those will be included. We also will have a World Service Auction, our National Service Project update, and a business meeting.

There will be no registration fee for this event, thanks to some of our generous donors. Your only costs will be your hotel room and lunch on Tuesday.

BONUS: First time attendees will be registered for a drawing to win two $100 cash prizes, plus any attendee (excluding Board members) is eligible to win two $100 cash prizes. That is $400 given as incentives to attend.

Home base will be the Fredericksburg Inn and Suites, 201 S. Washington (Hwy 87). Rates: $129 per night or $179 for a suite (breakfast is included). Please call (830) 997-0202 and ask for the YMCA Meeting rate. This rate is available Sun.-Thurs. if you wish to extend your stay.

DEADLINE FOR RESERVATIONS: MARCH 20, 2023.

Please send your name/names, address, email, and phone number to our Treasurer, Jim Heiman to register for this gathering. We need to have an accurate count of people so we can make dinner reservations, so please do not forget to email Jim. Just click on his name above.

Hello Craig,

I hope all is well with you and yours. Are you ready for our Spring Gathering? We will meet in Fabulous Fredericksburg, TX. There really is lots to do in the springtime in and around Fredericksburg.

Do you get it? We really want you to come and enjoy the fellowship and fun with fellow YMCA Alumni friends. That's probably the best incentive of all.

There are two very sad notes to report:

Suzanne Mabie, our newsletter editor, passed away in February. She will be greatly missed by our Sam Schreiner Chapter of YMCA Alumni. A celebration of Suzanne’s life is scheduled for Saturday, March 25, 2023, 5-8 P.M. at Circle C Ranch Community Center, 7817 LaCrosse Ave., Austin, TX. Click HERE for more information.

Our beloved Gerry Tucker passed away the weekend of Dec. 17. A service was held for him in Edmond, Oklahoma Jan.14. He and his wife Wanda were frequent attendees at our gatherings. We will miss Gerry.

Schreiner Chapter Finance Report

Jim Heiman, Treasurer

Our chapter’s balance as of January 31, 2023 was $8,420.35, with an outstanding pledge of $500 to the NSP.

Since our last report on October 31, our INCOME from November 1, 2022 – January 31, 2023 was $3,720 ($1,525 World Service Auction, $625 in membership dues, and $1,570 in donations to our chapter). EXPENSES during these months were $1,834 ($1,525 World Service Donation, $209 for a President’s training conference, $50 for our last newsletter, and $50 for a prepaid membership) for a net gain of $1,886.

Our chapter has been very fortunate to have some very generous donors. One of our main donors has designated their gift to be used to help newer members attend one of our chapter gatherings and to recruit new members. Our Executive Board met recently and decided with this donation to waive the registration fee for the upcoming Gathering in Fredericksburg to all participants.

We also are offering some cash prizes for all registered members to the Gathering. Hooray. Let’s gather in Fredericksburg and share in some new and old friendship.

If you have any other ideas on how we could encourage more members to attend our great chapter gatherings, please share with any of the chapter leadership.

Membership: 81 and counting

Chuck and Johnie Dandridge, Membership Co-Chairs

Our chapter has 7 lifetime member units, which is a total of 9 lifetime members. We have 54 total units or 81 members as of March 1, 2023. We are in the process of reaching out to 7 members who have not yet renewed their membership, and 4 have indicated their plans to renew. So we will have 85 to 89 members this year if all goes well.

Thanks to all the Board members for reaching out and helping encourage members to renew and reconnect.

Hope to see many of you in Fredericksburg real soon.

National Service Project:

Our 2023 campaign is about to end

By Pam Power

Thanks to all members of the Sam Schreiner Chapter who have contributed to our National Service Project (NSP) in Dupree, S.D. Our project is a partnership with the YMCA of the Seven Council Fires on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation.

We only have until March 31 in our member fundraising campaign, so it is time to make a pledge or donate if you have not already done so. We have a goal this year of $250,000. We have raised $120,000 as of March 9.

This project is so exciting, helping to solve the housing insecurity on the reservation. If you have not read about it, you can find more information by clicking the button below and visiting our Case for Support website where you will find complete information and may donate. Please scroll to the end and designate the Sam Schreiner Chapter.

You also can volunteer as “boots on the ground”, starting in May for eight different waves of volunteers. Our current plan is to build four of the tiny homes (although they are really not “tiny”) and two “twigs.” A twig is a small YMCA branch (get it?).

I was privileged to serve as a volunteer this past October, and I was certainly overwhelmed with learning about their culture, their land, and to be part of this great effort, as well as making new YMCA friends and renewing some friendships from years past.

ISC: Consider volunteering overseas

The International Service Corps (ISC), a program of YMCA Alumni, is one of the ways our members can serve by becoming a volunteer for a YMCA in another country.

The Committee has been reviewing proposals, with a goal of identifying each YMCA, greatest need, and promoting them accordingly to our YMCA alumni volunteers. We try to match our volunteers’ strengths with the needs of each international YMCA.

Then the YMCA Alumni Board will begin the process of promoting the needs. We have received proposals from Panama, Nicaragua, Uruguay, the Regional Office, the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas for Latin America and the Caribbean. We also have proposals for the YMCA in Tiania, Albania, and one in Bitola, Macedonia through YMCA Europe. A couple we will do virtually for now include Novosibirsk, Siberian and Bitola.

Click the button below to our YMCA Alumni website for lots of details and volunteer application forms. in your CONNECTION, and in chapter newsletters.

Were you with us last fall? Our gathering was held in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Oct. 11-13 at the Staybridge Suites Hotel on beautiful Lake Hamilton. If you missed it, we'll see you for sure in Fredericksburg, right? (Photo by Patrick Murphy).
