KAREN LESLIE

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the summer edition of our chapter newsletter.

As the summer sun finally shines brightly upon us, we are excited to share the latest happenings and opportunities for connection with our alumni community. This season is the perfect time to come together, rekindle friendships, and make a positive impact.

We have two gatherings planned in June that we encourage you to participate in.

Join us on June 10 as we roll up our sleeves to support the Dartmouth, MA Y, and on June 18 for a golf (optional) and social gathering at the Tree House Brewery in Tewksbury, MA.

Additionally, we are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a chapter conference on beautiful Cape Cod Oct. 6-8. The event will be rich with learning opportunities and social activities; all set against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful times of year on the Cape.

Detailed information on all of the upcoming events is included in the newsletter.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Until then, be well.

EARLY SUMMER GATHERING JUNE 18:

JOIN US AT THE TREE HOUSE BREWERY

Come join us for golf (optional) social, beverages, food, and connecting with Y colleagues on Wednesday, June 18. Guests who are not YMCA Alumni members are welcome. The event is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (or as long as you wish to stay).

RSVP by email to: Rob Reeves by Friday, June 13. There is no cost (other than golf and what you choose to purchase); however, we do need a head count for planning purposes.

MEET YOUR NEW CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Committee Members: Top row (L to R): Steve Russell, Harold Hemberger, Andrea Vignali. Center row (L to R): Kathy Viens, Sandy Walker. Bottom row (L to R): Rob Reeves, Lisa Drouin, Dick Foot.

The newly constituted Membership Committee is focusing its efforts on identifying, recruiting, engaging, and retaining members for our New England YMCA Alumni Chapter. Currently, we have 80 member units, which equals 111 individuals, with a member retention rate of 89 percent. “The potential of involving so many more Y staff and retirees is enormous,” says Lisa Drouin, Membership Committee Chair.

Chapter members are encouraged to reach out via email to Lisa Drouin to get involved.

“We would love to hear your ideas, as well as talk about volunteer opportunities which could include coordinating small regional gatherings, serving as our newsletter Editor, etc. We invite you to be a part of all we do!” she says.

WE WELCOME CURRENT Y STAFF, TOO

Did you know that you do not have to be retired from the Y to be a member of the YMCA Alumni?

We welcome everyone, no matter where you are on your career journey.

Welcome Jill Robie-Axtell and Blake

Our Chapter’s First Non-Retired Members

"Thank you for including myself and my husband, Blake Axtell to the Y Alumni Group. I have been with the YMCA since 1987. I am currently the CEO of the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard. My husband is a retired banker. First employed as a Commercial lender and then later in safety and soundness with the FDIC and Bank of Boston. We live on Martha’s Vineyard. Empty nesters with 5 adult children spread across the country, 6 grandchildren and a wedding in September. Life is full. As my retirement inches closer, I look forward to reconnecting with many of you and learning how to enjoy retirement to the fullest! I remember working with many of you over my 38-year career and am deeply grateful for the mentorship, coaching and friendship I have received over the years. I have tried to pay it forward. Life often throws us curve balls. I’m not sure where I would be now without my YMCA career and family. Blake and I look forward to the conference in October!" -- Jill and Blake

NEW ENGLAND YMCA ALUMNI

HOMEBUILDING COMPLETES YEAR 14

The New England YMCA Alumni have together donated over $18,000, making this most crucial village restoration possible. Thanks to all of you who have so generously supported this endeavor for over 14 years. Nearly all of the members have donated and those who, for whatever reason, have not yet can still join in.

This homebuilding project has had a profound impact on a small village, where many kind people live in shacks constructed from whatever spare materials were available.

Our 2025 New England Alumni Building Team/Roster:

Lou Falk, aka “PAPA LOU,” his 14th year. He has traveled to DR about 50 times including his working days as International Program Director at the Hartford YMCA.

A few highlights: Meeting “Miguel” as a preschooler when he was part of a group of little hellions (mild troublemakers in the classroom). He is now in his late teens and still looks forward to seeing Lou every year and greets him with a big hug.

One of the young volunteers who had never traveled out of the United States, came up to him at the end of the week saying she was so happy “it hurts." Lou says he goes because it’s such a good experience for everyone who goes and “It just makes me feel good!”

Alan Hurst his 5th year.

Highlights (with tongue in cheek): Getting sick with "Campylobacter" (exposed in the U.S. before he left). Everyone else got COVID but he did not. Everyone was fine, but he had to stay an extra two weeks because they wouldn't let him on the plane. The house did get built.

Mike and Kristi Norklun their 2nd year (attended in 2015).

“Everything about the trip was excellent.” It was more fulfilling than he ever imagined and is excited to come back this year. He loved the feeling of being hands-on and seeing the results and impact.

Nancy Bonell her 3rd year.

She goes because it's a great group of people to work with and most importantly, people need homes to live in that aren’t cardboard. Nancy has taken a moment to reflect on some of her favorite memories: The kids. The excitement and appreciation the kids showed when she helped pass out school and arts and crafts supplies. The interaction and excitement in the community towards the work and workers. Not usually talked about but the trash collecting is an integral part of what we do for the village. She loves to explore the local culture. She loves the local Larimar stones, musical instruments, and especially the coffee.

Bruce Macdonald is in his 4th year.

Kim Decker is back for year 2.

Not a New England member but a retired lifelong YMCA CEO from New Jersey.

Kim recently retired and heard about our project. She joined us last year. She is extremely talented and had an immediate impact on our project. She is fun to work with, a hard worker and will volunteer for whatever is necessary. This year she will be coordinating the construction of one of the two houses being built.
