AIA Southeast Asia: Manila Summer Conference 2024

The Manila Summer Conference 2024 united global design professionals in a hybrid event to explore health, well-being, and sustainable architecture. With live sessions in both Manila and Vietnam, experts exchanged insights on the future of architecture.

AIA Sub-Saharan Africa: AIA President Kimberly Dowdell's Visit to Africa

August 2024 was a landmark month for AIA Sub-Saharan Africa (AIA SSA), highlighted by the historic visit of AIA President Kimberly Dowdell—the first Black female president and only the second Black president of AIA to visit Africa. Her trip, which marked a key moment in global architectural collaboration, featured high-profile engagements such as the Nigerian Institute of Architects Abuja Chapter's 40th Anniversary, a CEO roundtable, and cultural tours of Nigeria.

With vibrant discussions on sustainable development, cross-generational teamwork, and mentorship in architecture, Kimberly's visit energized the AIA SSA community and set the stage for future partnerships across the continent.

NCARB: Expanding Access to International Reciprocity

NCARB has expanded two Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) - with Australia and New Zealand, and Canada and Mexico, making it easier for architects to pursue international licensure.

These updates open doors for newly licensed architects and streamline cross-border practice opportunities.

AROUND THE WORLD

AIA UK has hosted a series of vibrant events and initiatives celebrating key milestones in architecture. The highlight was the 2024 Design Awards summer Gala, marking the chapter's 30th anniversary. Glenn Harmon also achieved licensure through the Mutual Recognition Agreement, paving the way for American architect in the UK.

Members explored architectural gems during a Bike Trip across the Hoo Peninsula, and the Sustainability Series launched with discussions on innovative bio-based materials. Through building tours and research on hydro-social design, AIA UK continues to nurture a dynamic architectural community that addresses contemporary challenges.

This summer, AIA Shanghai has been buzzing with events celebrating innovation and sustainability!

We kicked off with an inspiring tour of the Design Innovation Institute Shanghai (DIIS), followed by a symposium on wellness and sustainability in hospitality design, addressing the rising demand for health-focused experiences. As domestic tourism surged, local designers shared insight on this trend, leading to a lively village tour that highlighted sustainable rural community building.

AIA Middle East has been very active with exciting events! Looking ahead, the highly anticipated Year-End Conference 2024 in Doha, November 22-23, will dive into Qatar's architectural transformation under the theme "Morphogenesis of a Pearl", focusing on innovation, sustainability, and cultural heritage.

Recent highlights include a well-attended course on digital tools for urban design, showcasing the chapter's commitment to shaping the future of architecture.

AIA Latin America made history with its first in-person meeting during the Design Fair Powered by IMM Cologne in Medellín, September 2024.

A highlight was a new partnership with the Colombian Association of Interior Architecture (ACAI) and the official announcement of the AIA Latin America section. This meeting set the stage for future growth, including the upcoming FAST- FORWARD Congreso de Arquitectura in Mexico City, February 2025.

Kicking off our September activities, we were thrilled to host a lecture by Ms. Toshiko Kinoshita from the Heritage Houses Trust, followed by an exclusive tour of the stunning Sonoda House, designed by Junzo Yoshimura. Participants delved into the challenges of preserving Japan's historical homes, learning how market forces often favour new construction over cultural preservation.

Get ready for the upcoming AIA Continental Europe Fall Conference 2024 in Bulgaria, where ancient history meets modern innovation! From October 24-28, explore the rich cultural heritage of this dynamic region. With limited spots remaining.

AIA Canada Society has been buzzing with exciting activities focused on sustainability and innovation! From webinars on AI's role in architecture and adaptive reuse, to in-person events like the Summer Social in Toronto, our members are actively shaping the future of design.

We're proud to collaborate with the Royal Institute of British Architects and offer cutting-edge training like the Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
