Your Monthly Update from CNYRIC Administration

Google Additional Services

You may have heard news from districts about some additional Google Services that are not compliant with Ed Law 2-d. Back in November, districts received communication from the NYSED Privacy Office that provided guidance related to Google Services and Education Law Section 2-d. Google states that parental permission is all that is required for these additional services; however, NYSED does not allow parental permission to access non-compliant services. These prohibitions against the use of the additional services do not relate to a teacher’s use, but all services for student use must adhere to Ed Law 2-d.

With that being said, the regional information centers (RICs) are developing a field support strategy in conjunction with BOCES Model Schools. I am one of the RIC directors that is facilitating the Google Services and Education Law Section 2-d work group. On Jan. 7, BOCES Model School staff statewide received turnkey training from Kiker Learning. The RICs will be developing a website and training resources, Q&A information, and more. I will share more with you as it develops.

Crystal is available to help K-12 public school districts connect with the right resources and people at CISA.
