Your Monthly Update from CNYRIC Administration

Google Additional Services

As promised, the regional information centers have launched a website around the Google Core and Additional Services that has training resources, Q&A information, and more surrounding data privacy. Additionally, the BOCES Models Schools program has provided instructional resources as well.

The CNYRIC advisory council reconvened at the end of January, with a focus on Data Leadership and Cybersecurity. One takeaway from the meeting was the council’s desire to add a question/consideration section to our monthly communication, which we’ll do starting in March. Superintendents can use these as guiding questions for their conversations with directors of technology and data protection officers.

PROVIDE LEADERSHIP, ASSISTANCE, AND RESOURCES TO ENHANCE DISTRICTS’ SECURITY POSTURE IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND STATE PRIORITIES

Utilizing resources from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Department of Homeland Security, the CNYRIC has developed a memo for superintendents to utilize with School Boards on Mitigating Business Email Compromise and Phishing by Reducing Online Staff Directory Information.

PROVIDE LEADERSHIP, ASSISTANCE, AND RESOURCES TO ENHANCE DISTRICTS’ TECHNOLOGY ECOSYSTEMS IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND STATE PRIORITIES

On Sept. 22, the CNYRIC migrated its Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) to Cloudflare's Magic Transit protection. In the last 30 days, Cloudflare Magic Transit has mitigated more than 220 million packets from DDoS attacks.

The CNYRIC, in conjunction with Cloudflare support, is now prepared to elevate the protection level to include full Layer 3 and Layer 4 advanced protection. The full protection level provides access to the entire range of Cloudflare's DDoS mitigation capabilities. Details on the configuration change have been sent to the directors of technology via memo. The CNYRIC will be completing this configuration change during a scheduled maintenance window the morning of Presidents Day (Feb. 17).
