Project Background

The project seeks to improve safety for motorists navigating through the Lee Hill School Drive and Old Dominion Parkway intersection by installing a mini roundabout. The project is estimated to cost around $884,554, and would be funded through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program.

With this proposed design, the existing traffic pattern at the intersection would be converted to a mini roundabout along with pedestrian crossings, lighting, and a bus pad for the FXBGO! bus stop.

During construction, intermittent tractor-trailer and oversized vehicle detours will be in place.

A mini roundabout is typically used in lower speed residential areas with the primary differences from a larger roundabout being a smaller diameter and a fully mountable center island to facilitate large truck movements.

Watch a video on mini roundabouts and visit VDOT’s Innovative Intersections page to learn more about this design, which is intended to reduce the number of points where vehicles can cross paths and eliminates the potential for right-angle and head-on crashes.

The project would be advertised to potential bidders for construction in March 2024.

Please visit the project page online at www.VirginiaDOT.org to view meeting materials. All materials will be posted online by Tuesday, Jan. 17.
