Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) Grant Funding Cuts Threaten Legal Aid to Families

The Community Health Law Project fights every day for many vulnerable populations in New Jersey, including individuals with Developmental Disabilities.

For 47 years, CHLP has received a grant through the State of New Jersey's Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), allowing us to help more than 200 families yearly navigate healthcare, housing, insurance, and other legal challenges.

This critical grant funding is at risk of being cut from Governor Phil Murphy's proposed fiscal year 2026 budget.

ACTION NEEDED - TAKE 2 MINUTES TO CALL

Call Gov. Phil Murphy's office (609) 292‑6000 and urge full restoration of DDD funds.

Email or call your state legislators and tell them why protecting this lifeline matters.

Watch our new video, which spotlights the life-changing impact of CHLP's work on our DD families.

Making Workplaces Accessible –

One Interpreter at a Time

For four years, a deaf food‑service employee attended staff meetings and trainings without a dependable way to follow what was being said. Instructions, safety updates, and schedule changes were spoken aloud, leaving him without the information his hearing peers received.

Hasibul Haque, Esq., staff attorney from our Neptune office, invoked the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD) to request a reasonable accommodation: an American Sign Language interpreter whenever scheduled meetings or trainings occur.

The law requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations, including effective communication so employees with disabilities can do their jobs with equal access to their coworkers.

The employer eventually agreed.

Going forward, an interpreter will be scheduled whenever the employee receives advance notice of a meeting or training session.

With this straightforward accommodation in place, critical information will be accessible—no guesswork required.

Cases like this demonstrate how legal advocacy turns civil rights statutes into everyday protections. CHLP’s work ensures that workers across New Jersey can participate fully and safely on the job.

One accommodation doesn’t just help a single worker; it sets a precedent for equity in that workplace and beyond.

CHLP handles cases like this every day, using the law to dismantle barriers and uphold dignity.

If you believe in building workplaces where everyone can fully participate, consider supporting our work.

Empowering Seniors in Ocean County at Law Day

This week, Neptune office Managing Attorney Rebecca Kolas, Esq., and Senior Staff Attorney Sherri Orenberg-Ruggieri, Esq., met with the residents of the Holiday City at Berkeley senior community for their Law Day event.

Sherri presented guidance on wills, powers of attorney, and advanced healthcare directives, while Rebecca shared information on CHLP's services and legal help for Ocean County seniors.

We were also joined by speakers from our partner organization, the New Jersey State Bar Association, who shared important information about elder law and constitutional law.

Thanks to our Ocean County Senior Services Aging grant, we offer legal services to seniors 60+ in Ocean County. We are also the recipient of Ocean County ARPA funding to assist seniors facing homelessness/foreclosure and low-income individuals with disabilities under 60 with similar issues.

We're proud to empower our community!
