For four years, a deaf food‑service employee attended staff meetings and trainings without a dependable way to follow what was being said. Instructions, safety updates, and schedule changes were spoken aloud, leaving him without the information his hearing peers received.
Hasibul Haque, Esq., staff attorney from our Neptune office, invoked the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (NJLAD) to request a reasonable accommodation: an American Sign Language interpreter whenever scheduled meetings or trainings occur.
The law requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations, including effective communication so employees with disabilities can do their jobs with equal access to their coworkers.
The employer eventually agreed.
Going forward, an interpreter will be scheduled whenever the employee receives advance notice of a meeting or training session.
