Presidential Message from

Anthony Miniaci, MD, FRCSC:

Dear ASES Members,

As we move from Thanksgiving into the heart of the holiday season, we find ourselves reflecting not only on what we are grateful for, but also on the spirit of giving and sharing that unites us—regardless of culture or faith. This time of year is about hope, joy, peace, and generosity—values that resonate deeply with our work as shoulder and elbow surgeons and as members of the ASES community.

During this season of reflection and giving, it is fitting to recognize the incredible work being done by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Foundation. Six years ago, when I was honored to be selected as Chairman of the Foundation, many members were unaware of its existence or the impact it could have. We heard that message loud and clear. Since then, we have invested significant effort into reorganizing the Foundation, defining its relevance, developing a strategic plan, and engaging our membership. Today, thanks to the dedication of countless members and partners, the Foundation has grown into a thriving, highly effective organization supporting initiatives that advance education, research, training, and patient care.

One of our most visible and successful efforts is National Shoulder and Elbow Week. What began as a small outreach initiative with just five “test” sites has grown into a nationally recognized event celebrated in communities across the country. By the end of May 2026, we will have completed our fifth year, hosting 39 events nationwide and engaging more than 5,000 attendees with participation from over 300 ASES members. Since its inception, National Shoulder and Elbow Week will have raised more than $2 million—half of which has been reinvested directly into the hosting communities. These funds have supported a wide range of initiatives, including research grants, patient education, and community outreach programs—many of which would not have been possible without this support.

In addition, the Foundation supports programs for our patients, members, fellowship training, and research awards that total millions of dollars annually. All of this work is driven by a single goal: improving shoulder and elbow care for our patients while training and supporting current and future generations of shoulder and elbow surgeons.

Yet, there is always more we can do. Charity, of course, begins at home. As an ASES member, you have many opportunities to contribute meaningfully—by attending or helping organize National Shoulder and Elbow Week events, recruiting patients to participate, assisting with fundraising activities, or considering a personal donation. Membership engagement continues to grow, with more than one-third of our members now actively giving and participating.

Remember, even small contributions can make a significant impact. Something as simple as setting aside the cost of a favorite coffee or weekly beverage can add up over time. I was recently at a restaurant during a meeting where a single cocktail cost $20. A $20 weekly contribution grows to more than $1,000 annually—a powerful and tangible way to support the Foundation and its mission.

By actively participating in Foundation activities, supporting events, and contributing in any way possible, we send a clear message about our collective commitment to improving care for patients with shoulder and elbow conditions. Every effort, no matter the size, truly counts.

This holiday season, I encourage each of you to embrace the spirit of giving and sharing—both within our specialty and beyond. Thank you for your dedication, generosity, and continued support of the ASES Foundation. Together, we can continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of our patients, our members, and the broader community.

Wishing you and your families a season filled with joy, peace, and meaningful connections—and a very Happy New Year as we step into 2026 together.

With gratitude,

Anthony Miniaci, MD, FRCSC

President, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons

As we reflect on the year coming to a close, we would like to thank you for your continued engagement, commitment, and support. Throughout this year, your involvement has helped drive meaningful progress across our educational programs, research initiatives, and collaborative efforts—strengthening the shoulder and elbow community as a whole.

Looking ahead, we are excited about the opportunities before us. With new programs, ongoing innovation, and a shared focus on advancing patient care, we remain committed to serving you and building on the momentum we’ve achieved together.

We wish you and your families a joyful holiday season and a healthy, successful year ahead. Thank you for being an integral part of ASES.

A Year in Review:

March: Introducing ASES Link

In March, ASES proudly launched the ASES LINK—our new Learning Management System created to serve as a centralized hub for shoulder and elbow education. October: The ASES Foundation Paddle Raise Showcases Member Support at the

ASES Annual Meeting

This year’s Annual Meeting was a testament to the incredible generosity and commitment of our members, who continue to drive the ASES Foundation's mission forward.

One of the highlights was recognizing the outstanding contributions of our members and leaders. The Annual Meeting marked the conclusion of Dr. Joseph A. Abboud’s three-year term as Foundation Chairman, during which he provided dedicated leadership and expanded ASES Foundation funding to historical highs, and we were honored to welcome Dr. Thomas “Quin” Throckmorton as the Foundation’s new Chairman. Additionally, we awarded the Founders Legacy Awards, celebrating Dr. Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, Dr. Joseph A. Abboud, Dr. Ranjan Gupta and Dr. Jason Hsu for their remarkable work in Leadership, Service, Impact & Opportunity, and Mentorship.

The meeting also marked a fundraising milestone with the Foundation’s paddle raise. Thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of attendees, we raised an incredible $240,000 to support our mission.

December: The ASES Foundation's

End-of-Year Appeal

In 2025, the ASES Foundation placed a focus on connecting members to the mission and impact of their giving. Through targeted awareness efforts, we shared how Foundation support directly fuels research, education, and early-career development. These initiatives strengthened engagement and reinforced the confidence our members place in the Foundation’s work and long-term vision.

Thanks to the support of our members and industry partners, the Foundation awarded more than $1 million in grants this year through key programs such as National Shoulder & Elbow Week and the Fellowship Education Grant. These funds will support the salaries and benefits of 33 fellows and advance critical research in shoulder and elbow care, as well as support local research projects across the country

As we close out the year, your continued support ensures that this important work not only continues, but grows.
