Presidential Message from

Anthony Miniaci, MD, FRCSC:

The Critical Importance of Communication

As you recall, the theme of this year’s presidency has been Adapting to Change. This month, I’d like to focus on a topic that deserves far more attention than we typically give it:

Communication

As a big Formula One fan, this point was driven home to me recently while watching a particularly tight race. One driver needed a pit stop completed in under three seconds to maintain track position. The car came in, and a highly orchestrated pit crew changed tires, refueled, and made adjustments—all in just two seconds. The driver returned to the track and maintained position.

Watching that team work together in perfect unison made me realize that such success could only happen through precise coordination—where every member knew exactly what the others were doing and when. In other words, it was a powerful example of the importance of communication.

We often pay lip service to the value of communication in highly functioning organizations and among individuals, but we don’t always reflect on just how crucial it truly is. The coordination required between the driver and every member of the pit crew was essential to success. The same holds true for any organization: clear, timely communication among teammates and colleagues is critical to high performance.

This reality has been reinforced by recognizing that many of our members do not regularly rely on traditional forms of communication such as newsletters or email. Yet effective communication remains essential if we are to move forward together, understand one another, and achieve our organization’s mission, vision, and goals.

Leading by Example

I am a clear example of someone who has had to adapt. Prior to this year of my presidency, I had little to no social media presence and did not actively use those platforms, as most of you are aware. However, recognizing the responsibility of my role—and the need to connect with all segments of our membership—I decided to engage.

What I discovered has been eye-opening: an overwhelming response and meaningful feedback from many of you across a variety of platforms. This experience has strengthened my belief that we must meet our members where they are—and increasingly, that means embracing newer forms of communication alongside our traditional channels.

Taking Action on Communication

For that reason, we have launched an initiative led by our Technology Committee, chaired by Drs. Howard Routman and Alex Aleem, and guided by our Marketing Associate, Bridgette Heschel, to examine:

  • How we communicate
  • Who we communicate with—our various constituencies, including members, patients, and business partners
  • What forms of communication work best for each constituency and demographic

While many of us still rely on traditional methods, social media and newer platforms are becoming increasingly important and will continue to grow in significance. We must ask ourselves: How do we best share our message—not only with our members, but also with our patients, the public, insurance companies, and government agencies—about the value of what we do?

Looking Ahead

As we continue this year focused on adapting to change, I have asked our group to examine all of our communication processes—including our website, LINK, and committee activity—to better understand how we deliver our message to everyone. This review may include surveys, consultations, and guidance to help us improve and modernize our approach.

I encourage each of us to reflect on how we communicate and how open we are to new ways of connecting. Communication is more than a tool—it is the foundation of collaboration, understanding, and progress.

In the months ahead, you will see opportunities to share your preferences and ideas about how we can improve our communication efforts. Your input will help shape a strategy that is inclusive, effective, and responsive to the needs of our diverse membership.

By strengthening how we communicate, we strengthen our ability to serve our members, advocate for our profession, and fulfill our mission. I look forward to working with all of you as we continue to adapt, grow, and move forward—together.

Did you know your compensation for shoulder and elbow surgery was recently cut by 2.5%!

The 2.5% work RVU efficiency adjustment from the 2026 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule took effect January 1, 2026, applying to most non-time-based services, and reducing RVU payments by 2.5%.

But wait! There’s more! CMS intends to implement similar additional cuts every three years, going forward.

The rationale from CMS is that they believe that surgeons today are more efficient than in the past, so they cut the payments. However, recently published data* indicates there has not been an efficiency gain in procedure times. A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons found that the proposed efficiency adjustment is not supported by empirical surgical time data, as analysis of intra-service times from 1.7 million surgeries across 249 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes and 11 specialties showed that overall operative times increased by 3.1 percent from 2019 to 2023, with 90 percent of CPT codes having longer or similar operative times in 2023 compared to 2019. This, along with increasing costs of doing business as well as increased requirements to comply with increased regulatory oversights, makes many surgeons feel that these cuts in payments are doubly problematic and will lead to consolidation or closure of practices and decreased patient access to care.

Help us fight back! The ASES Advocacy Committee exists to advocate for improved patient access to high quality orthopedic care and for the needs of patients and surgeons. We need to have our voices heard nationally, and the OrthoPAC is the best way to do that. Take a moment now to contribute to the OrthoPAC by clicking the link below or scanning the QR code on the right:
