Pulpwood Paradise

Pulpwood, the smaller trees typically chipped for making wood pulp or oriented strand board (OSB) or wood pellets, provides balance and diversification to the forest products industry. Robust, sustainable timber markets and wood baskets feature a broad set of wood consumers. A local wood basin with no demand for pulpwood or chips is like a shoe box with one shoe: incomplete.

USFWS Proposed To List Tricolored Bats As Endangered

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing tricolored bats as federally endangered due to the widespread impact of the deadly white-nose syndrome.

Tricolored bats (Perimyotis subflavus) are found in 39 states east of the Rocky Mountains and Washington, D.C. as well as in parts of eastern Canada, Mexico and Central America. They are one of a handful of species that are most affected by white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that can be deadly for hibernating bats. One recent study found that 59% of the range of tricolored bats lies within the white-nose syndrome-affected area.

Want to know how cold it was in 1490? Ask a tree.

Sometimes getting to where you want to go is a matter of finding the right guide.

Four teams of researchers, led by Harvard Forest ecologists, searched for a patch of ancient trees deep in the woods of western Pennsylvania this summer as part of a project to study how climate changes affected trees over the centuries. One of the scientists had come across them 40 years earlier, but they appeared to have vanished. Just as the group was about to give up and move on they came across someone who gave them a valuable clue.

How Putin’s Invasion Of Ukraine Produced A Windfall For Enviva’s Wood Pellets Business

On a crisp North Carolina morning, an eastern pine forest is being clear cut in a precisely choreographed hydraulic ballet. Pincers grab 500-pound, 30-foot tree trunks, run them through trimmers and auto-cutters and then stack the nearly uniform logs onto flatbed trucks which take them to mills to be cut into construction boards. Grappling claws scoop up the remains of the harvest—branches, limbs and scraps—and drop them into open-topped dump trucks headed for one of 10 plants run by Enviva, to be chopped, dried, pulverized and pressed into two-inch wood pellets.

In the weeks leading up to and during our Alabama Woods to Goods Week 2022 celebration, we will be sharing stories about why forestry is "more than an industry" to people throughout the state of Alabama. Let us know what forestry means to you by clicking the link below.

Building Sustainable Futures With Mass Timber Construction

Sustainable building practices are becoming a priority for owners and contractors alike. One of the most exciting green building trends in recent years is the use of mass timber, specifically cross-laminated timber (CLT). CLT is a prefabricated, solid engineered wood panel. One panel consists of several layers– typically three, five or seven– of dimensional lumber stacked and glued together at a 90-degree angle. These panels are lightweight yet strong and stable, making CLT a viable alternative to traditional building materials like concrete, masonry, or steel in some instances. These qualities have led to this material’s implementation on large-scale projects across the country. While these building benefits are great for project teams, one being the ease of installation, mass timber offers sustainable solutions like lowering greenhouse gas emissions and improving indoor air quality.
