Catherine Saiki, NP is UCSF's First Nominee for National APP of the Year

The National Advanced Practice Provider Week Awards seek to celebrate the achievements of APP colleagues and their contributions to healthcare delivery throughout the country. This year UCSF nominated Catherine Saiki, NP for the National APP of the Year award. For the past three years Catherine has been an integral member of the inpatient hospice team. "Catherine is one of the most skilled and knowledgeable clinicians in the hospital on palliative care and comfort care." "...is instrumental in every new initiative, expansion or endeavor the inpatient hospice service undertakes". "Soft-spoken and not one to boast of her achievements, or expertise, she leads through example and action." "Not only does she do an amazing job navigating complex goals of care conversations with patients and families during a vulnerable and often emotionally fraught time, but her knowledge base around symptom management is second to none."

Appreciating All of You

National APP Week September 23-27, 2024

Your dedication as an NP, PA, CRNA or Nurse Midwive is evident in every aspect of patient care from expanding access to comprehensive services to delivering emergency and specialty care, assisting in surgeries and managing chronic diseases. You perform a vital role in patient education and advocacy, ensuring patients understand their care options and empower them to make informed decisions. UCSF Health is recognizing and appreciating you with these small gifts (image: badge buddy and drawstring backpack)--please ask your manager for your gift as it was distributed Sept 23-27, 2024.

Rubi Alva de Hickson, DNP

Advocates For Health Equity

Rubi works as an adult critical care NP at UCSF, but when not caring for the critically ill, she has been very active in advocating for health equity at the state level. AB890 required that NPs to verbally notify patients that they are an NP and not physicians or surgeons--for Spanish-speaking patients, the law said the term "enfermera(o) especializada(o)" or specialized nurse be used. However, this is not the correct translation and does not fully capture the scope of practice of an NP, their responsibilities or level of education. Read this Q&A style interview to learn how Rubi partnered with California Association for Nurse Practitioners (CANP) and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) to have the phrase corrected to "enfermera(o) practicante avanzada" with SB1451 that was signed into law on September 22, 2024. SB1451 also includes language to ensure the full and effective implementation of AB890. Read more here. Rubi's advocacy will be far reaching as she is the guest editor in the October edition of the Hispanic Health Care International Journal and also authored a literature review titled "The Appropriate Translation of the Nurse Practitioner Will Foster Health Equity" in the November edition. Tune into Tuesday's October 8, 2024 APP Town Hall to hear more about Rubi's advocacy and also the updates about SB1451.

Dana Jakoubek, NP Selected for Leadership Development Program Scholarship

Only 2 APPs in nation were selected to receive a scholarship to participate in a premier transplant leadership program--and UCSF's transplant NP Dana Jakoubek was one recipient. In September 2024, Dana traveled to the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University amongst transplant center program directors and senior transplant program administrators. Together they all wanted to understand and help address the most challenging aspects of leading a team in transplantation and adapting to evolving needs in the field. Participating in the program "augmented my [her] professional development by strengthening my [her] leadership skills, equipping me [her] with tools to navigate complex challenges." The program emphasized leading multisystem teams and aligning leadership with core values, which deeply resonated with Dana. She gained a deeper understanding of how values-based leadership can transform patient care. Read more about this program.

UCSF HEALTH

Hurricane Helene Impacts Baxter Plant Causing Shortage of IV Fluids

UCSF Health is facing a shortage of IV fluids due to damage to the Baxter manufacturing plant in North Carolina caused by Hurricane Helene.

Current situation: Leadership is closely monitoring of IV and irrigation fluid inventory and taking steps to manage the available supply. Alternative suppliers are actively being sought out. No immediate adjustment to the surgical schedules are being made, but may do so in the coming days.

Action for clinical teams:

  • conduct daily assessments if patients can safely transition from IV to oral medications
  • shift patients to oral or enteral hydration whenever feasible
  • discontinue maintenance IV fluids as soon as it is safe to do so

As always, patients come first. Please continue to exercise clinical judgement to ensure conservation efforts prioritize the health and safety of our patients. Your attention and diligence to conserving our current fluid resources are critical in navigating this situation. Read more.
