New APP BCH Oakland Manager
Hani Gutierrez, RN, MSN, CPNP-PC has joined Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland and the Office of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) as the new BCH Oakland Manager of APPs. Hani will work collaboratively with all BCH Oakland and BCH San Francisco departments, clinic areas, and sites to ensure alignment among all areas for patient care and Pediatric APP support
Hani is a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner who graduated from UCSF SON in 2009. After training at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, CA in the Inflammatory Bowel Disease program, she continued her professional path at Stanford Children's for five years, concentrating on inflammatory bowel disorders and managing their IBD program. Most recently, she contributed to the growth of the GI program at UCSF Fresno, where she taught pediatric residents and helped develop a multidisciplinary pediatric feeding program.
As a mother of three young children, Hani enjoys spending time with her family outdoors in the beautiful bay area where she grew up.

She joined Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland in the early spring of 2021 and has already served as the Co-Chair of the APP Advisory Board as well as on the mentorship committee.
| | Team Recognition: Advanced Heart Failure Comprehensive Care Center | |
The Advanced Heart Failure Comprehensive Care Center had a historical record breaking volume of heart transplants. In 2022, they performed 49 heart transplants. That is the most that the UCSF Heart Transplant Program has ever performed since the inception of the program in 1989. The 20,000th transplant performed at UCSF Health was the center’s first DCD (donor after circulatory death) heart transplant. The growth in volumes is due to close collaboration with the CICU, ICU, CT Surgery and cardiogenic shock teams. It is truly due to a multidisciplinary team effort between APPs, nurses, MDs, social workers, pharmacists, PT/OT, patient coordinators, and many others among other disciplines. This is also due to increased donor utilization with the expansion of criteria to include the use of Hepatitis C organs, DCD organs, as well as the use of the Organ Care System (OCS) which allows the team to secure organs from longer distances and keep them perfused for up to 12 hours.
February is Heart Month and Heart Failure Awareness Week is February 12-18, 2023. During this week the Advanced Heart Failure Comprehensive Care Center is setting up patient education tables to teach the community about Heart Failure and ways that patients can optimize their own care while managing their heart failure. These tables will be staffed by APPs, nurses, and other team members in key settings across UCSF Health including Mt. Zion Primary Care, Mission Bay, and Parnassus campus.

Rosie Krauter, Director of Informatics and Clinical Systems successfully passes Epic Clinical Informaticist Certification exam. The Epic certification is for IT professionals in the health industry that work with Epic software. To become Epic certified, candidates must go through a training program and then take and pass a certification exam. There are several modules as options that candidates can take for Epic certification. Candidates must be sponsored by an employer to be eligible for the Epic certification program. Epic is particular, and will not let just anyone become certified in using their software. The Epic certification test is very challenging.

Effective February 6, 2023
To better accommodate the needs of all of our constituents, and preserve parking close to our health care facilities for patients and visitors, the following changes are effective Monday, February 6. They include:
- Expanding valet service for employees at the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) Garage at Parnassus Heights which will increase employee parking by 150 spots.
-
Discontinuing the daily discounted employee parking rate ($26) at two locations: Millberry Union (MU) Garage at Parnassus Heights, and Medical Center Garage and lots at Mission Bay. Daily discounted rates were introduced during COVID-19, and while we will not fully discontinue daily rates, we need to eliminate discounts from patient parking areas. The daily discounted employee rate continues to be offered at the ACC Garage and all other non-Medical Center parking locations in Mission Bay.
- Promoting conveniently located non-UCSF facilities.

| | E-Consent and Paper Forms | |
On February 7, 2023, UCSF will begin to transition away from paper consent forms and launch electronic E-Consent forms generated and completed in APeX. This change will begin in the Operating Rooms and Interventional Radiology and will impact all cases performed across UCSF West Bay campuses (including Moffit Long, Mt. Zion, MB-Adult, MB-Pediatrics, OI, POSC, Neuro IR, Body IR).
NEW PAPER CONSENT FORM AND PROCESS FOR NON-PERIOPERATIVE AND IR STAFF
E-Consent will eventually launch across the UCSF Health enterprise. In the interim, a new paper form designed to mirror the E-Consent process will simultaneously launch for all non-surgical areas beginning February 7, 2023. We will announce when the new form is available for order and distribution. It will be ordered and distributed through our usual processes. A FAQ is also in development.
In accordance with the updated UCSF Consent Policy 6.02.02 , it is the responsibility of the attending physician, or other credentialed healthcare provider, who is knowledgeable about the specific surgery, procedure, or treatment, to have an informed consent discussion with the patient or their surrogate decision-maker. The credentialed provider is responsible for signing the electronic or paper consent form. If the procedure or treatment is one that a resident or fellow has demonstrated and documented competency to perform, as determined by their Chair or designee (i.e. Program Director), then the resident or fellow may have the informed consent discussion with the patient or their surrogate decision maker and may be the provider to sign the form.
E-CONSENT LAUNCH FOR PERIOPERATIVE & IR STAFF ONLY
In preparation, all perioperative and IR providers, including surgeons, proceduralists, residents, fellows, APPs, and nursing staff who work in one of these areas will be required to complete mandatory training in the new E-Consent workflows before January 20, 2023.
Required training will be available through the UC Learning Center beginning January 4th.
Providers are required to complete 2 eLearning modules (15min/module): Due January 20, 2023
1.E-Consent Management Providers
2. UCSF Defensible Informed Consent (MedIQ)
Please reach out to Liza Wick, Kim Dimino, or Andy Chau with any questions.

| | Patient Dignity Questions | |
submitted by Mike Rabow, MD, FAAHPM (adapted for this newsletter)
To honor the unique personhood of each of our patients, Harvey Max Chochinov recommends asking the "Patient Dignity Questions"--What do I need to know about you as a person to take the best care of you possible?" Here, we can ask central questions that matter to the particular care and goals of this particular person. "What matters most to you", "What do you hope for?" What worries you?"
Click here to read a short opinion piece by Chochinov in a Canadian Paper about Personhood.

Go Live Patient Capacity Management Center Feb 21
PCMC will provide centralized management of patient flow and uses real-time data analytics to optimize throughput across all portals of entry such as the ED, OR/PACU, physician offices, outpatient clinics and transfers from outside facilities. The command center will enable more proactive approach toward capacity management, e.g. by using predictive modeling to anticipate and mitigate increased demand and volume surges.
Click here to listen to the February 2023 APP Town Hall about this PCMC and the role of an APP in patient flow and throughput.

We are reviving a former committee here at UCSF, the Wellness and Social committee. The purpose is to improve APP well-being by creating a platform in which an APP can focus on their wellness. We are hoping to organize 4 events a year and are looking for representatives from all campuses within the UCSF network.
Please reach out to Won Kim (won.kim2@ucsf.com) or co-chair Kim Ly (kimly@ucsf.edu) for further information and if you are interested in joining.
