Thank you for a great Rendez-vous ✨
That’s a wrap on the 35th edition of our annual conference! Even with the challenges of the Air Canada labour dispute, widespread wildfires across Atlantic Canada, along with ongoing drought conditions, this new edition of Rendez-vous prevailed. The conference was held successfully and received with enthusiasm, energy, and a sense of connection.
This year’s event took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, hosted at the Dalhousie Arts Centre and the Fountain School of Performing Arts. A big thank you goes out to both venues and their incredible staff, who welcomed us warmly and supported our event every step of the way.
The week began on a reflective and meaningful note with the Opening Soirée, where we had the honour of welcoming Charlotte Bernard, Mi’kmaq Matriarch and Cultural Advisor. Her reflection, tailored specifically for our community, grounded us and in the spirit of reconciliation, CITT/ICTS also made a donation to the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre in Halifax, a small but important gesture of support and solidarity.
Throughout the week, members came together to learn, share, and build relationships taking in many of the 16 sessions and 5 training workshops offered, including the inaugural IATSE Training Hub, the AFC's Mental Health First Aid Training and ETC's Eos Overview Training. The learning opportunities and quality of the programming and presenters are among the most rewarding aspects of Rendez-vous each year.
Thursday’s Trade Show brought a fantastic lineup of vendors and industry partners, including, ACT Entertainment, AVL Media, Behind the Scenes, Christie Lites Sales, DataVisual Marketing, d&b audiotechnik Canada, Elation Professional, GerrAudio Distribution, IATSE Canada, Joel Theatrical Rigging, Lumenayre Distribution, MacEwan University, Ontario Staging Limited, Strong MDI, Theatrixx Technologies, and the University of Saskatchewan. Their presence helped foster new ideas and showcase innovative products that continue to shape our industry. Thank you to our exhibitors for your continued support of CITT/ICTS and Rendez-vous!
Of course, no Rendez-vous would be complete without the ever-zany Swag Bingo, sponsored by GerrAudio Distribution. Our fundraising event proved once again to be a crowd favourite — and this year it raised over $3,600! As a reminder, all proceeds from this event go to The AFC. Thank you to everyone who participated, donated prizes, and made the evening such a blast. Special shout out to our callers Howard Van Schiack, Bill Sapsis and Brianne Gwartz.
We closed out the week with our Annual Luncheon, AGM, and Awards Ceremony. A special highlight this year was the presentation of our inaugural Emerging Technical Talent Award, which went to two incredibly deserving recipients: Brendan Briceland and Marshall Kidd. Both were able to join us virtually for a few moments and it was a joy to celebrate with them. You can learn more about them in the following sections of the newsletter. As we look ahead, we encourage our members to begin thinking about next year’s award nominations. Categories for the 2026 Awards will remain the same: Emerging Technical Talent, Achievement in Education, Technical Innovation and Achievement, and Lifetime Achievement. Your input helps us recognize deserving and dedicated individuals in our community.
This year’s Plenary Session also sparked some valuable discussion about our digital future and how we might better connect and support our membership across regions. The feedback and ideas shared will help guide our next steps, and we thank everyone who participated in the conversation.
A very special thank you to our Student Volunteers: Maggee Leavey, Samuel Paquette, Gen Matzuzaka and Takumi Kamidono for supporting us throughout the week, you were all a joy to work with and we wish you the best in your upcoming school year.
Finally, thank you to all who attended, presented, supported, and sponsored this year’s Rendez-vous. Your presence, generosity, and passion make this event what it is: a celebration of our community and a space for growth, connection, and inspiration. We can’t wait to see you again next year in Ottawa.
With gratitude,
The National Office Staff & Board of Directors

🏆 2025 Emerging Technical Talent Award Recipients
Congratulations to Brendan Briceland and Marshall Kidd!
CITT/ICTS is pleased to recognize the exceptional talent and early career of two emerging professionals who are shaping the future of our field. Brendan and Marshall have shown exceptional promise in their careers, and it is with great pleasure that we recognize their achievements.
The Emerging Technical Talent Award is awarded to an individual who has shown continued development and work ethic in the early stages of their professional career. The candidates must have spent at least 2-years and not more than 10-years working in a technical field in the Canadian live performance community.
This year the nomination committee felt that both of these individuals deserved to be recognized for their achievements.
→ Learn more about this year's recipients
Postscript: Although there were four awards categories listed for this year, we only received nominations for the one category: Emerging Technical Talent. While we are happy to recognize emerging talent, we had also hoped to honour more of our industry peers. Awards nominations are driven by the membership. We sincerely hope that next year, we will receive more nominations from our members, making this an even greater celebration!

The AFC Workshop
"Perfectly Human: Understanding and Managing Perfectionism."
This new workshop from The AFC team explores what perfectionism is, where it tends to show up in people’s lives (such as procrastination, giving up easily, stress, and low self-worth), and why it persists.
For those working in the performing arts and entertainment, where high standards and constant pressure can feel overwhelming, understanding and managing perfectionism can be especially powerful. The workshop will take a deep dive into perfectionistic behaviours, re-evaluate the importance of achievement, and introduce practical tools and strategies to reduce perfectionist thinking. Participants will also learn how to challenge unhelpful habits and build self-compassion as they work toward change.
September 18, 2025 - 1 pm ET | 10 am PT - Virtual on Zoom
Facilitated by The AFC team members Hayley Schmalz, MSW, RSW (Ont.) and Emily Hill, MSW, RSW (Ont.) presented in partnership with The Artists' Health Centre.

The National Theatre School of Canada announces 2025-2026 Artistic Leadership Residents
This year's theme is 𝑬𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚.
Theatre companies are being asked to work in a more sustainable way, to build processes and productions that keep in mind the environmental impact of theatre. Much of this responsibility falls upon the heads of production organizations, but they don’t always have the tools to accomplish what they want and need.
Another distinctive feature of this year’s residency is that it is designed for 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
The 9 residents will be at NTS from September 22nd to 23rd, 2025. They will discuss topics and learn practical sustainable practices that will benefit their own work and companies, and which they can then share with their communities.
