New Lee County Entry Saw Palmetto Parkway Is Now Open
Babcock Ranch’s new Lee County entrance Saw Palmetto Parkway from State Route 31 to Curry Preserve Drive is now open. Bordered by water at SR 31, the parkway is the town’s southernmost entry, provides immediate access to DiVosta’s new TerraWalk neighborhood. Saw Palmetto Parkway offers shorter drive times to Trail’s Edge, Crescent Grove, Palmetto Landing, Palmetto Park, and MidTown when it connects through to Babcock Trail.

Winding east, Saw Palmetto Parkway offers a convenient alternative route for in-town traffic, with roundabout intersections at Curry Preserve drive, Muhly Grass Road, and Babcock Trail providing internal links to Crescent B Commons, the coming-soon Shoppes at Yellow Pine, Founder’s Square, a new fire department, Charlotte County Sheriff substation, and The Flatwoods, a new neighborhood of single-family home rentals. An additional roundabout east of Babcock Trail will offer access to MidTown’s planned town center, village green, and businesses.

Wildlife Photo of the Week:
Monarch Butteryfly Caterpillar
A Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar perched on a Milkweed in Babcock Ranch.
Species: Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus)

Photographer: Joseph Martin

Location: Babcock Ranch

Christina's Take: Insights from Babcock Ranch Environmental Mitigation Manager Christina Kontos:

  • The lovely monarch butterfly is one of the most iconic butterfly species across the world and are known for their impressive annual migration event from the northeast United States and Canada to southwest Mexico, which is about 3,000 miles and they can travel between 50-100 miles a day!
  • Adult monarchs are a fleeting beauty and live for only about four to five weeks, so this migration event takes place over four generations of butterflies to complete.
  • Did you know that monarch butterflies are poisonous due to the consumption of their only host plant, the milkweed? As a caterpillar, they can eat 200 times their weight and grow very quickly since they are only in this stage for about 10-14 days.
  • Their vibrant orange-red wings act as a warning sign symbolizing their toxicity to deter predators and are lined with thick black veins and white spots along the dark edges of their wings.
  • Males are sexually dimorphic from females by having distinguished black dots along the veins of their wings and are slightly larger than the females.
  • Their scientific name, Danaus plexippus, means “sleepy transformation” in Greek, which refers to their ability to metamorphosize within their chrysalis.
  • The chrysalis of the monarch butterfly is decorated with beautiful gold spots due to the carotenoid pigments from their milkweed diet and the word “chrysalis” is derived from the Greek word “chrysos,” which means gold.
