The 89th Texas Legislative Session convenes on January 14, 2025.
Of note is that certain legislators, certain statewide officers, and certain political committees are subject to a moratorium on political contributions during a legislative session. The moratorium begins this Sunday, December 15, 2024. The moratorium only applies to the regular session and lasts through 20 days after the adjournment of the regular session - which is June 22, 2025. Contributions can be made or accepted on or after June 23, 2025.
Other moratorium nuances:
-
Moratorium includes members-elect.
-
Moratorium includes caucuses - so don’t buy lunch for a caucus, reimburse a caucus, or sponsor a reception during session for any caucus. PAAT Compliance Tip: Just say no!
-
A promise to make a contribution after the moratorium is over is a pledge and a pledge is prohibited during the moratorium, just like a contribution.
-
A statewide officeholder or member of the legislature who was defeated in the November general election is not subject to the moratorium, nor is a specific-purpose political committee that supports or assists only such an officeholder or member.
- For judges, March 5, 2025 is the last day to accept contributions for candidates who last appeared on the ballot in the general election.
