Trip of the Week

"Where one goes pleasantly. . ."

According to the Chesapeake Bay Program, “A tributary of the Potomac River, Mattawoman Creek sits just a few miles south of Washington, D.C., but is one of Maryland’s healthiest waterways.” Native plants, once harvested by American Indians, continue to thrive in the creek, including wild rice, arrow arum, cattail and arrowhead. The 30-mile creek is nationally-renowned for its fish habitat. It is considered the best nursery for migratory fish in the Bay region. The creek is also the only site on Maryland's western shore with natural populations of the American lotus. Read more about how you can plan to paddle pleasantly down this beautiful watershed creek.
