Panel Discussion: Structured Support for Transitions into Higher Education

The Center for Educational Research, Policy, and Practice at the University of Texas at Arlington is launching a 4-part online panel series, highlighting Structured Supports for Academic and Career Success, and you're invited to the Spring kickoff event.

Join us for the first discussion in the series -- Structured Support for Transitions into Higher Education from 6 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2023 -- as we discuss ways in which we are currently supporting our students and new ideas for enhanced support of specific student groups. As pathways to college completion have changed, so have the needs of our students. Between early college programs for high school students, increased enrollment of underrepresented populations, and evolving methods of learning, different students need new and innovative types of support.

Featured Panelists

Maria Delgado, Ph.D., Visiting Assistant Professor for Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at UTA. Dr. Delgado has over fifteen years of experience in community college administration (academic affairs and student services). Prior to coming to UTA, Dr. Delgado was a full-time administrator at Tarrant County College- Southeast. She led the Supplemental Instruction Program and Hispanic Serving Initiatives. In addition, she served as coordinator of academic programs and adjunct faculty at Dallas College-Northlake Campus. Currently, Dr. Delgado is researching the experiences of Latinx students enrolled at a community college in North Texas and their perception of the term Latinx.

Kimshi Hickman, Ph.D., the Assistant Vice Provost for Retention and Completion at UTA. Dr. Hickman has served in higher education for over 20 years in student affairs, enrollment management and academic affairs. Her career focus for the past 10 years has been on increasing retention and graduation rates through work in academic support programs and retention focused initiatives. She serves on the executive board of the Peer-Led Team Learning International Society. Dr. Hickman's research interests are effectiveness of academic support models with underrepresented students, FTIC persistence, and transfer persistence.
