Team Sequor Law Wins Gold

Congratulations to our team of trivia-savvy lawyers who took home the gold at the Legal Services of Greater Miami, Inc. Young Professionals Council’s trivia tournament at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science. The Sequor Law team was made up of Edward H. On May 30, 2023, the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Second Circuit issued its widely anticipated opinion in the case of Purdue Pharma, L.P. et al v. City of Grande Prairie et al. (In re Purdue Pharma L.P.), Case No. 22-110 reversing the controversial order of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and affirming the Bankruptcy Court’s confirmation order of the chapter 11 plan with nonconsensual third-party releases in favor of the Sackler family. The Second Circuit held that sections 105(a) and 1123(b)(6) of the Bankruptcy Code authorize non-consensual third-party releases of direct claims and further concluded that precedent within the circuit permitted such releases in specific circumstances. Notably, the opinion comes in the wake of petitions for writ of certiorari to the United States Supreme Court seeking review of the Fifth Circuit’s decision in In re Highland Cap. Mgmt., L.P., 48 F.4th 419 (5th Cir. 2022) holding that section 524(e) of the Bankruptcy Code prohibits a chapter 11 plan’s exculpation or release provisions in favor of non-debtors.

Davis, Jr., participated in the “High-Value International Recovery: Ask me anything (Part One) COVID Relief Fraud: Opportunities to Recover Hundreds” panel, discussing emerging and dominant issues that impact the ability to be successful and effective. Additionally, Daniel M. Coyle spoke on the "Crypto: All Your Questions Answered" panel offering his expertise on everything crypto.

• May 17 in London: London International Disputes Week (LIDW) - Co-hosted by Stevens & Bolton LLP, Joseph Rome discussed the future of cryptocurrency on the panel, “Decrypting Crypto – Reading the Runes.”

• May 17-19 in Vilamoura, Portugal: ThoughtLeaders4 Fire International - Sequor Law was a proud sponsor of this year’s conference and hosted the Welcome Lunch for the Chairs. Leyza F. Blanco, co-chair and member of the advisory committee, offered her expertise during a Fireside Chat with the Hon. Judge Robert A. Mark. Joseph Rome also attended as the winner of the TL4 FIRE Starters Essay Contest.

• May 24-27 in The Hague, Netherlands: AIJA Half-Year May Conference - Arnoldo B. Lacayo and Juan J. Mendoza attended the international conference, where Juan spoke on the panel, “The Hague Judgments Convention - A Game Changer?,” discussing The Hague Judgments Convention and how its potential ratification by the U.S. may affect our foreign judgment recognition scheme.

• June 1 in Bermuda: INSOL Bermuda Seminar - Leyza F. Blanco attended the day-long seminar and connected with other lawyers and insolvency practitioners.

Get to Know Joseph Rome

What inspired you to pursue a law career?

I don’t come from a family with many lawyers. As I started meeting friends of friends that were lawyers, and I realized we were on the same intellectual wavelength, which made me want to be part of their community. Only later did I start to develop a deep understanding and enjoyment of the work that lawyers do day to day.

What skills do you draw upon when it comes to your specific practice areas?

I am lucky to be able to apply a lot of skills as an asset recovery and commercial litigator, but the one that has been the most important is curiosity. And yes, curiosity is a skill—it takes practice to consider what pieces of the puzzle are missing, to see beyond the surface of what someone might be telling you, and to ask those follow up questions and investigate further until you really, deeply understand an issue.
