CPP Program - Key Updates

ACIP October Meeting

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently held a meeting on October 23-24. Meeting topics included:

  • Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) – CDC now recommends the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for all PCV-naïve adults aged 50 years and older. Lowering the age for pneumococcal vaccination gives more adults the opportunity to protect themselves from pneumococcal disease at the age when risk of infection substantially increases.
  • COVID-19 vaccine Updated the vaccine recommendations for people 65 years and older and those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised to receive a second dose of 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine 6 months after their first dose.
  • Immunization Schedules – Approval of the 2025 recommended child/adolescent and adult immunization schedules. The new 2025 schedules are expected to be published in MMWR in January 2025.

Next Steps

If the CDC accepts these recommendations, they will be published in the MMWR within 90 days. This typically signals the insurance companies to begin paying under the new age recommendations. We recommend reaching out to your major payers to make sure adequate payment is in place before making changes to your schedule.

Capvaxive™ - Merck’s 21-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV21) for Adults

There was quite a bit of discussion at the October ACIP meeting about the exciting advancements in preventing invasive pneumococcal disease in adults!

As announced previously, Merck’s Capvaxive Vaccine (PCV21) is now a part of the portfolio of discounts available to CPP members who are enrolled in the Merck contract. Additionally, orders of Capvaxive placed between now and March 31, 2025 will receive extended payment terms of 2% 90 days net 91. Please refer to Merck’s press release regarding the ACIP’s recommendation as well as their billing and coding guide for additional information.

If you have questions about the member discounts or if you would like to enroll in the Merck contract, please contact the CPP office.
