Family Medicine Forum (FMF) Update

We had amazing representation at the Family Medicine Forum (FMF) in Toronto November 9-12. Many of our faculty, including members of the Senior Leadership Team were in attendance, and participated in the sessions. We also showcased our program and our innovation projects at the exhibits, and generated interest and enthusiasm from many participants.

Family Medicine postgraduate leaders from across Canada continued to meet with members of the Education Reform Task Force and CFPC educational leadership to discuss the possibilities for evolving and improving family medicine training in Canada in the years ahead. Participants reflected on family medicine values and possibilities for curriculum reform, including in a 3-year program. There was tremendous positive energy in these preliminary consultations, as participants discussed mutual challenges, and the possibilities of future family medicine training to better meet the needs of society.

We were also delighted to celebrate the following faculty who received awards for their contributions to Family Medicine: Dr. Doug Gruner, Dr. Rita Hafizi, Dr. Chantal D'Aoust-Bernard, and Dr. Gary Viner. Dr. Elias Horner (PGY3 resident) and Emily Seale (Medical student) were also recognized for their achievements. Refer to the 2022 CFPC Awards of Recognition Recipients section of this Newsletter.

Launch of New Online Tool: Docmapper.ca

Dr. Lise Bjerre, Associate Professor, and the University of Ottawa and Institut du Savoir Montfort Chair in Family Medicine, has launched a new online tool, Docmapper.ca | trouvezunmedecin.ca, which makes it easier for people to locate a doctor based on their language needs in Ottawa and the region of Renfrew County. This tool is a huge step in removing language barriers from those seeking a family doctor – while the platform is offered in English and French, it lists physicians who speak over 50 different languages. Although still in development, this tool has the potential to have additional applications for use by physicians and health planners.

The full coverage of this innovative online tool can be read on uOttawa’s news webpage.

CBC interview and Radio Broadcast

An article, “Only a handful of family doctors in Ottawa accepting new patients,” released November 15th by the CBC, examines the dire shortage of family doctors in Ottawa. Two of our faculty members, Dr. Clare Liddy, Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, and Dr. Claudia Hubbes, Assistant Professor, and family physician at the Rosemount Clinic in Ottawa, were interviewed. Each discussed the complexity of the current medical situation in which there is an increase of people in need of a family doctor, and yet fewer physicians providing family medicine care. Please follow this link for the full article.

Also released on November 15th is a CBC interview on the Ottawa Morning show with Robyn Bresnahan, titled "Why are there so few family doctors in Ottawa?" which features Dr. Liddy and Dr. Hubbes discussing the family doctor shortage and the issues patients face when trying to find a doctor.

Remembering Dr. Walter Rosser

We are saddened by the passing of a former chair of our department, Dr. Walter Rosser, on October 2, 2022. Dr. Rosser was the 4th Chair of uOttawa’s Department of Family Medicine, serving from 1981 to 1986.  He was a leader in family medicine for 55 years and a consummate clinician, teacher, and researcher, who contributed substantially to family medicine.

The department offers its heartfelt condolences to the Rosser family. Please view Dr. Rosser’s obituary for more information about his life and his extensive achievements.

Anti-Racism Postgraduate Education

Friday Nov 4, 2022, Dr. Denice Lewis, Postgraduate Director of Curriculum, and Dr. Eric Wooltorton, Director of Faculty Development, delivered the first Department of Family Medicine resident academic day workshop on anti-racism.

Drs. Lewis (featured in picture) and Wooltorton reviewed practical frameworks for approaching anti-racism, distinguishing it from equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and the Department’s work to change skin-diagnosis teaching and provide faculty development. Working in small groups, the residents used a quality improvement process to review fabricated but realistic cases where racism contributed to a clinical or educational adverse outcome.

After the session, residents reflected on their personal anti-racism journeys, anonymously rating their own position before and after the session. Many residents described that they had shifted into a “growth zone” (the most active anti-racist state) after the session (15.2% before vs 36.4% after).  Anonymous participant feedback indicates residents want the discussions to continue and 87.5% said the Department is either on the “right direction” or “very much the right direction” with regards to anti-racism approaches. Watch for faculty development work on anti-racism in the coming months.
