Our People in the News

2022 Trillium Primary Health Care Research Day

Dr. Jonathan Fitzsimon, Assistant Professor, presented research findings from his work on two innovative approaches to improving access to family physicians in Renfrew County, through hybrid models of virtual and in-person care. The Virtual Triage and Assessment Centre (VTAC) has had a dramatic impact on reducing over-reliance on Emergency Departments, by providing unattached patients in particular with access to a family physician for acute, episodic care including COVID-19 assessment, testing and management. Integrated Virtual Care (IVC) enables previously unattached patients to roster with a named family physician, who works predominantly remotely but is embedded within the local Family Health Team. This allows patients to receive comprehensive, team-based primary care with family physician leadership.

Dr. Fitzsimon then formed part of a panel discussion along with Dr. Tara Kiran, Dr. Catherine Yu and Patient Partner, Jennifer Boyle, fielding questions from the conference audience around community primary care research priorities.

Two other esteemed Department of Family Medicine members presented during concurrent oral presentations:

Lise M. Bjerre, Associate Professor, presented as part of the OHT Data and Support theme: I need a family doctor!! How can I find one? – Docmapper.ca: An interactive map to support (language-concordant) access to primary care

Kamila Premji, Assistant Professor, presented as part of the Pandemic Responses in Primary Care theme: Who will be left behind? The anticipated impacts of an aging family physician workforce on primary care patients and physicians in Ontario

Simone Dahrouge, Associate Professor, submitted a poster for this event titled: Leveraging Primary care Ontario Practice based Learning and Research (POPLAR) Network to Improve Quality in Primary Care: The SPIDER study

Dr. Peggy Kleinplatz, a Full Professor with the Department of Family Medicine and School of Epidemiology and Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, was recently featured in an article, New research provides theory on why women stopped menstruating upon arrival at Nazi death camps, written by David McFadden, Research Writer at uOttawa.

Dr. Kleinplatz is the lead author of a compelling new paper titled Women’s experiences of infertility after the Holocaust. The full article can be accessed via the September 2022 issue of the Social Science & Medicine Journal

Dr. Kleinplatz also holds a cross-appointment with the Faculty of Education, University of Ottawa.

Our Department of Family Medicine’s PGY3 Medical Resident, Dr. Ellias Horner, won the 2022 Family Medicine Resident Award for Scholarly Achievement from the College of Family Physicians of Canada. This scholarship recognizes the outstanding academic accomplishments of family medicine residents.

Refer to the CFPC’s Honours & Awards program for more information about this award.

Dr. Alykhan Abdulla, an Assistant Professor with uOttawa’s Department of Family Medicine, discusses how his role as a family physician has evolved since he started his practice in 1993, in his article, Abdulla: Overworked and exhausted, family doctors carry on, published in the Ottawa Citizen on September 30, 2022.

The Department of Family Medicine’s Dr. Anna Wilkinson, Associate Professor, and Dr. James Einarsson, Family physician at Cornelia Court Family Medicine in Smiths Falls, Ontario, published their Family Medicine Research Project, Vaccination considerations for patients receiving cancer therapy, in the October 2022 Canadian Family Physician (CFP) journal.

Forty Under 40 Award Recipient: Dr. Rohit Gandhi

Dr. Gandhi, a Lecturer with the Department of Family Medicine and Physician Lead for Eastern Canada, Rocket Doctor, was the recipient of the highly esteemed business award, Forty Under 40. The 2022 award winners are showcased in the “Introducing Ottawa’s 2022 Forty Under 40 Recipients” Ottawa Business Journal article.

This award recognizes Dr. Gandhi’s involvement in a technology start-up since it was founded in 2020, called “Rocket Doctor,” a rapidly growing digital health marketplace that provides comprehensive health care to patients, virtually. Over the past two years the company has helped provide care in Ontario, Alberta and BC. Dr. Gandhi is the Eastern Canadian Lead and has helped to recruit over 100 physicians and specialists in Ontario alone. “Rocket Doctor” provides universally covered virtual care to many unattached patients, rural patients, and marginalized communities, serving between 500-600 patients per day.

Our Medical Students in the News

A recent article published in the Barry’s Bay, Valley Gazette highlights our University of Ottawa Undergraduate medical students, Sarah Giacobbo, Sherif El Meniawy, and Richard Nadj, training in a rural, community setting.

What is common to all three students who did their five-week 3rd year Family Medicine core rotation in Barry’s Bay, is that the rural Family Medicine setting provides them with tremendous learning opportunities and exposure to the full range of Family Medicine, and fosters relationship building and connecting with the community.

With the current shortage of family physicians, combined with those close to retirement, rural hospitals have recruitment capacity for our medical students, making this a perfect pairing for students stepping in to fill much-needed roles within a dynamic rural setting.

For the full story, refer to the full article, Continuity of care attracts more physicians to rural Family Medicine.
