Public Advocates Remains Committed to Advancing Racial and Economic Justice

Today we woke up to a dangerous political reality: our electorate has chosen Donald J. Trump to be President of the United States once again. Millions of us are mourning this frightening moment; we sit with feelings of disbelief, sadness, anger and everything in between.

As the nation makes a hard shift to the right, we know that the challenges ahead will be formidable. As progressives, we must resist distraction by the post-election blame game and risk further division. Now is the time to come together, learn from this election, reinvigorate our movement and take collective action to protect those Trump will seek to persecute, to uphold our rights, and to defend our democratic norms and institutions.

I want to reassure you that Public Advocates will remain your partner through these perilous times. For more than fifty years under many presidential administrations, we have fought in the courts and in our state and local governments to make rights real by dismantling racist and classist laws, while building power in BIPOC and low income communities to expand opportunities and an inclusive democracy for all. The election changes none of this.

Together with you, we will continue to fight for freedom and equality—for as long as it takes.
