Visionary Realms, paintings by Denise Vezza Maggiore. This vibrant and energetic collection of acrylic and mixed media pieces will transport viewers into another dimension of life and spirituality. The surreal environments and juxtaposed elements induce a thoughtful and curious approach to the images. Cosmic and earthly locations combine to celebrate the inner world and the physical places we inhabit. Together, they create an atmosphere that is conducive to introspective meditations while thrilling the eyes and soul. Poetic writings for select pieces further illuminate aspects of the vision to stir hearts and minds. (more) | |
This year, we have the good fortune that Veteran's Day is actually the second Friday of the month- our traditional day for Music Night. Our musical performance celebrating Veterans is always special. Because of the guys in RhythmWorks Band and The Hub's designation as the local chapter HQ for Guitars for Vets, we've got access to lots of musicians, and many of them are veterans. We've assembled a Veteran's band, and they'll be performing a variety of tunes to stir your patriotic feelings. Come out and support our heroes. Veterans are admitted for free.
At last year's Veteran's Music Night, we lost power about 20 minutes into the show. The band carried on--acoustically only--for as long as we had light. Many in the crowd used their smartphone flashlights to help. I can't say I wish for another power outage, but it was a special and memorable performance.
Once we all disco back to 1977 at our single annual fundraising gala, Friday Night Fever (hurry and get one or two of the few remaining tickets), our attention quickly turns to the holidays (see the nearby holiday schedule). We'll decorate The Hub on November 13, debuting the Giving Tree that day as well. The Giving Tree allows you to buy ornaments to decorate the tree while providing the funds for scholarships for needy students to attend our Winter and Summer Camps. Ornaments are priced so that all can help.
A little later in the month, we'll be back with the opening of our ever-popular Gallery of Gifts and the 3rd outing of The Art of the Trees. The Gallery of Gifts affords you the opportunity to complete your holiday shopping with unique, artistic gifts that your friends and relatives will treasure forever.
The Art of the Trees event kicks off with a members-only preview brunch on Sunday, November 27. Our members get the first crack at stunningly-decorated small trees and wreaths that will bring seasonal cheer to your home or office or perhaps brighten the season for a loved one or friend. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of the trees and wreaths will go toward funding our art Outreach programs.
Finally, it's time to enroll your kids or grandkids in one or more of our 4 different 2-day Winter Art Camps. Two outstanding instructors will ensure your little ones want to join us daily. You'll find details below. We do fun at The Hub on Canal!

Art in the Form of Film:
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Saturday, November 12, 5:45-9pm
| This beautifully written film was crafted by then newcomers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck who won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Not only did these childhood friends pen the script but they also starred in the film, along with Robin Williams who took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The story follows a group of Boston South End working-class friends, who expect little more from life than what their blue collar jobs can offer. However, Will Hunting (Damon) has an extraordinary gift for math which he slyly reveals at his MIT janitorial job. With the help of therapist Williams, Hunting confronts his ambivalence about leaving his buddies behind to pursue a new life for himself. Instructor Paul Marino will introduce the film, raise questions to ponder and host a post-viewing discussion. (More) | |

The Hub on Canal is blessed to have a large group of in-house volunteers who help us leverage our employee base and get things done in support of our mission. Normally, it's their good work that's highlighted on these pages.
This month, however, we'd like to recognize Frank Murru and Teri Corbett. Teri and Frank are friends of The Hub and they generously donated their time to remodel our two downstairs bathrooms. We're grateful for that very significant commitment.
