JULY 2023

Founders Gallery - July & August

Todo lo Latino - Saturday, July 1, 2023 - Opening: 4-7pm

The Latin culture is rich and diverse, and The Hub on Canal is proud to bring a taste of it to our Founders Gallery. The exhibition title, Todo lo Latino, reflects our effort to showcase the rich tapestry of the Latino culture. We present a selection of fine cigar boxes adorned with stunning label art, plus unique cigar box guitars, provided by Michael Breedlove/MBG Guitars, and purses. We are complementing the cigar boxes and creations with bold paintings by Columbian artist Grace Senior Morandi. To complete the Latin feel, the two-month exhibition opening reception on July 1 and reception on August 5 will feature a salsa dance demonstration by professional dance instructors Richard Rakhmatulin and Elizabeth Taylor – and the bar will offer sangria. Opening from 4-7pm. Salsa dance demonstration at 5pm. Grace and Michael will give artist talks at 6pm. Exhibition is through August 27. Cigar boxes are a gift from J.C. Newman Cigar Company.

Summer has arrived. That means a few things around here. First, it means the heat and humidity have returned, and those of us who remain in town tend to go out in the morning and stick closer to home--or in the pool--in the afternoon. Some threat of thunderstorms is omnipresent. Around my house, it also means that red wine consumption dips, and gin and tonic and margarita consumption goes up. Finally, with so many having escaped the Florida summer, our business dips and the programming we deliver to the community also dips. That doesn't mean we go dark, however.

I hope you'll join us on the 1st Saturday in July. This year that's July 1st! Despite being a Summer Saturday we have an overstuffed day of activities and excitement. If you drop by in the morning, you'll likely find many of our artists working in their studios or in the lobby. It's your chance to chat with them about their art or techniques.

At 1pm, we host Talk Art! That's our demonstration/discussion with a single Hub artist. For this 1st Saturday, Linda Lopez will discuss her encaustic art process.

Finally, we are quite excited about our July/August Founders Gallery exhibition, Todo lo Latino (All Things Latin). This exhibition began with the gift of dozens of cigar boxes by the JC Newman Company of Tampa. The boxes had once held the finest cigars from a variety of Latin American countries, but what caught our attention was the amazing art on and in the boxes. They are stunning. We'll exhibit a wide range of wood and pressboard boxes.

The cigar box donation led us down some related paths. We'll also exhibit several cigar box purses and an extensive collection of cigar box guitars--all playable. We complete the exhibition with the boldly colored paintings of Columbian artist Grace Senior Morandi. This is one of our more unique exhibitions. We hope you'll stop by during Gallery Walk on 1st Saturday.

To complete the feel of the Latino-inspired Gallery Walk, on both July and August 1st Saturdays, we'll feature our Hub dance instructors Richard and Elizabeth demonstrating Salsa steps in the lobby. Will you join them? Our bar will also be serving homemade Sangria.

Esperamos verte para toda la diversión (We hope to see you for all the fun).

Richard England, Executive Director

THE BOX CHALLENGE

A Group Exhibit

Opening: July 1st, 2023, 4-7pm

Through July 29, 2023

This month at Jane’s we challenged our potters to think outside of the box.

The Challenge. Work must follow a single parameter: to sit/fit inside a 4-inch cube.  Some artists treat the cube like a small gallery or diorama, while others use the challenge to explore new work on a small scale.

This challenge called for a great deal of focus and patience, not to mention a timeline of less than one month to create, fire, and glaze their piece. A smaller-scale task, testing a specific pottery skill.

TALK ART!

Art in the Form of Film:

Rumble Fish (1983)

Paul Marino

Friday, July 21 - 5:45-9pm

Featuring early-career defining performances by Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, and Diane Lane, this beautifully shot B/W film directed by Francis Ford Coppola is a critics’ favorite. Set in Tulsa in the late 1960s, the plot revolves around a gang of juveniles trying to assert their toughness and identity in a place with little else going on.

Slo' Jam

Wednesday, July 26

6-8pm - Hosted by Marcia Buckingham

Open to all musicians – beginner and advanced. Bring your guitar, ukulele, harmonica, percussion, etc. Play, sing along, or just listen. Playbooks provided. Fee: $5 at the door to join the jam or to listen.

Arthur H. Maus

Meet the newest member to the Hub family, Arthur H. Maus, better known as “Artie”. Artie is a creation by longtime Hub artist Tad Fyock in collaboration with fellow artist, Eliza Midgett. Tad is a master wood carver and Eliza is a painter with a very colorful palette, she is responsible for the vibrant mural and colorful bricks that line the front of our 100-year old building. See if you can spot Artie hanging out by the front entrance next time you come by The Hub!

We are pleased to reveal the recently completed "Stairs Project" installation. As many of you will know, about 12 months ago, we installed a Picasso-inspired image sliced up and hung from the treads of our interior staircase. It was a striking addition to our nice, but nothing to write home about, staircase. It was truly special because the painted image had been created by the ESE students that we teach as a part of one of our many Outreach programs.

The Picasso-inspired image was just replaced by a newly painted project inspired by the work of Alma Thomas, an African American artist who lived from the 1890s until the 1970s. She was known for using many bright primary colors and often created images that evoked the color wheel. This year's "Stairs Project" was created by the Elementary School students at Bethel Christian Academy on NSB's historic West Side. For many years The Hub has sent an art instructor every week during the school year to Bethel to ensure that the school's students experience the beneficial effect of participation in the arts.

Be sure to stop by The Hub and see the stairs in person.
