October Exhibition Opening in The Founders Gallery More Than Words Can Say, mixed media and prose by Johanna Riddle. How appropriate that Johanna Riddle’s exhibition, More Than Words Can Say, will grace The Hub’s Founders Gallery in October. Johanna’s work will feature the interaction between largely two-dimensional art and the written word – and October is National Book Month. Like many artists, Johanna’s work is often inspired by a passage in a book or poem. Likewise, works that did not spring from the written word often inspire Johanna to write about what she just created.
Johanna’s exhibition will use both of these pathways to share the connection with the viewer. Finally, Johanna will offer a unique opportunity for exhibition viewers to select from provided written passages and create a “piece of art” that they feel reflects that passage. The creations can be uploaded to a file that Johanna will manage during the exhibition’s run. Come by and see Johanna’s work and get involved. Opening from 4-7pm. Artist’s Talk, 6pm. Exhibition through October 30. (more)

Greetings to Our Hub on Canal Supporters,
Summer has given way to fall, at least according to the calendar. With the change of seasons comes the natural tendency to look ahead. We're no different.
Given the current state of the weather, it might seem surprising that I'm leading with Christmas, but I am. This year we're pushing back the debuts of our Gallery of Gifts and Art of the Trees a little deeper into November. We open our popular Gallery of Gifts on Black Friday--at what used to be the start of the holiday shopping season. As usual, you'll find a wide selection of one-of-a-kind artist-created gifts that will allow you to cross many folks off your shopping list.
Our fundraising event, The Art of the Trees, is back for the 3rd year. If you live for the holidays and harbor a gift for decorating, sign up with us to participate. We'll supply you with the holiday greenery. You put your talents to work and create a holiday masterpiece. We'll put all the trees and wreaths on display, making The Hub a holiday wonderland. They'll go on sale, and 100% of the proceeds will fund our children's art outreach programs. There's a flyer nearby. Join the fun soon as trees and wreaths are limited.
Switching gears, I want to tell you about 2 new children's art instruction programs we are launching. First, The Hub now offers art classes to children who are being homeschooled. This is discipline-based art instruction that fully complies with State educational standards. Our program for elementary-aged children is presently at capacity, but if you have an interest, please reach out as it's possible another class will be added.
At the same time, we are recruiting students for the middle/high school age group. Classes are set to start in mid-October. Further down the page, you'll find more information.
We've also returned to art instruction classes open to any youngster. Finding a suitable day and time has always been challenging, but we've decided to try again. Starting on October 10, we'll offer Monday evening art classes for serious art students in grades 6-12. We'll expose the young artists to a wide variety of mediums and help with skill-building techniques. A curriculum has been developed for the entire academic year. You'll find a link to more information below.

Art in the Form of Film:
Forrest Gump (1984)
Friday, October 21, 5:45-9pm
| Director Robert Zemeckis was one of the first to apply emerging special-effects technology to successfully insert our titular character into pivotal moments of late 20th century America. For its cleverness and gentle humor, this film endures as a soothing balm. Tom Hanks portrays an innocent special-needs teenager who, under the guidance of a fiercely protective mother played by Sally Field, develops into a more than self-sufficient man. Sprinkled throughout Forrest’s many adventures is woven into a sweet love story between Forrest and Jenny (Robin Wright), his emotionally damaged childhood sweetheart who comes to realize what true love is. Instructor Paul Marino will introduce the film, raise questions to ponder, and host a post-viewing discussion. (More) | |

ARTIST'S CORNER - Lisa Engelbrecht | |
|
Photographer Lisa Engelbrecht
Artists and art organizations are a collaborative bunch. We work together when we can, all in the interest of sharing the arts with everyone. One of our artists is involved in such a collaboration this month. Photographer Lisa Engelbrecht's beautiful twilight on the intercoastal image was chosen as this year's subject image for the "Blending of the Brushes" at the Artist's Workshop Plein Air Paint Out. The dynamic event, Blending of the Brushes, features 5 plein air painters working on the same canvas. They will work together to render Lisa's image in oil, with the finished work being auctioned off while it's still wet.
