Our Community Science Project continues to produce high quality data with a strong group of volunteers. Although we haven't seen the sediment pollution in the Spokane River this year, that's because of our warm winter, not our lack of science. In fact we've had stronger participation in the study than any year in the past, with data collected almost every day! You've taken about 240 samples, which is 60 out of the 68 days our study has been running. Check out the data below.

A couple of notes from the laboratory: Please make sure to close your Whirl-Paks completely and rip off the top. If you need a refresher on how to use Whirl-Paks, click here. Also please write the date, time, and location on the bags.

We've had three pulses of turbidity, causing the Spokane River to exceed the state standard of 5 ntu at TJ Meenach on 11 of the samples. Hangman Creek and the Riverside Cemetery site read over standard 45 and 38 times, respectively.

We've also collected a huge number of photos on our chronolog photo documenting station that clearly show the visual and aesthetic impacts to the river.

We trained about 40 new community scientists. A special thank you to those who showed up on the coldest day of the year, braving -10F weather at 11th Street Bridge.

Thank you for your photos!

I used them frequently in media, emails, and reports.

Real Time Water Temperature

One thing not related to the this study: We've placed real time temperature loggers in the watershed to produce data that the public can use. Now all four loggers are collecting data! You can check it out here. Hopefully they continue to collect data in the hot summer months and no beavers chew through our sensor cables again! Thank you to project volunteer James Pelland who made this project happen!

Thank you for supporting the effort to keep Spokane River and its tributaries clean for generations to come.
