Dear Xenia Community Schools Families,

As we all look ahead to the long weekend, I wanted to reach out a day early with this week's updates, reminders, and news. Be sure to check out all the news below this week, as there is a lot happening in our buildings.

This week, I want to draw your attention to our newly-approved Academic Calendar for next school year. It was approved at this week's board meeting, and includes all major dates to note for the 2023-2024 school year. It is available now online — just make sure you are looking at the right year as you mark your calendar, as both the 22-23 and 23-24 calendars are posted!

As a reminder, please note that our Central Office will be open on Friday, but closed on Monday in observance of the holiday.

Thank you and have a wonderful long weekend!

Sincerely,
Dr. Gabriel Lofton, Superintendent

SPRING SPORTS PARENT MEETING TONIGHT

The mandatory spring sports parent meeting is Thursday, February 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Bob Hope Auditorium. This meeting is for all spring athletes (grades 7-12) and their parents, and will include important information about eligibility, schedules, expectations and more.

VIEW THE SPRING SPORTS TRYOUT SCHEDULE

As a reminder, all athletes must have a current physical for this school year. Physicals can be from your regular medical provider, through our Athletics Training partners at Kettering Sports Medicine on Far Hills (937-395-3900), through the NEW Dayton Children's Health and Wellness Center located in Warner Middle School (937-641-4623), or another medical provider.

Still need to schedule your student's sports physical?

Schools may be closed this Friday for the long weekend, but the Dayton Children's health and wellness center will be OPEN, and they still have a limited number of appointments available throughout the day in the Warner clinic on February 17.

Call 937-641-4623 to book one of the remaining spots!

And remember, parents must go on to FinalForms, select the sport their son/daughter is participating in, and fill out the medical history information titled "OHSAA PPE Physical" and then print out that information to take for the physical.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR 2023-2024

The XCS Board of Education approved the 2023-2023 calendar at the meeting on Monday, February 13.

It is now available online, and can be found here.

TRIPLE P PARENTING PROGRAM

This spring, Xenia Community Schools will be hosting a series of optional parent learning sessions using the Triple P: Positive Parenting Program.

Designed for parents of elementary students, these sessions will be available in a mix of virtual and in-person options from March through April. Planned session topics range from positive parenting to a session that will give parents tools to help their child with issues such as fighting and aggression.

Parents will receive a $10 gift card (one per family) for attending each session, and everyone who signs up and attends will be entered into a drawing for the chance to win $50! Those who sign up and attend virtual events can pick up their $10 gift card at their child's school after the session has been completed.

XCS parents are asked to sign up for the session(s) they would like to attend in advance so that enough materials can be prepared. The form, which includes planned sessions with dates and times, is available through the Triple P event page on our site.

Learn more about these sessions and be sure to sign up in advance to reserve your seat — and your gift card for attending!

NSCW 2023 CELEBRATION AT WARNER MIDDLE SCHOOL

In honor of National School Counseling Week, our seventh grade student leadership class honored our three WMS counselors with a special brunch! Students decorated the room, read a poem about our counselors, gave them flowers, and served food to thank them for everything they do for our students and school throughout the year.

Thank you to ALL of our counselors who work throughout the year to help students dream big... and succeed!

FILM SCREENING: THE BRIGHT PATH

In celebration of Black History Month, a screening of “The Bright Path” will be held on Monday, February 27, 6:30 p.m. at the Xenia High School Auditorium. The screening is sponsored by AMMAK Productions, Xenia Rotary Club, and Xenia High School Athletics.

The Bright Path: The Johnny Bright Story, tells the virtually unknown story of Johnny Bright, a Black athlete from Fort Wayne, IN who emerged as one of the first Black football stars in an era of racial injustice of the 1940s and 50s. A frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy playing for Drake University, Bright was knocked unconscious by an intentional blow to the head in a game. The 1951 incident changed the course of Bright’s life but didn’t diminish his dreams.

Following the film, Dr. Eric Winston, founder of AMMAK Productions, will moderate a Q&A session featuring filmmaker Jerald Harkness, who wrote and directed the film, and Xenia High School and Central State University football coach Maurice Harden.

VALENTINE'S ART

Congratulations to Candice Dixon for winning the hearts — and votes! — of our Cox Elementary students with her Valentine's art!

Over the past week, students chose their favorite hearts and cast their vote, all without knowing whose art it was. Mrs. Dixon won with 35 student votes, followed closely by Lisa Gerrard in 2nd place and Sheila Jackson in 3rd place.
