Council Updates

Council Approves Greenhill Athletic Performance Center

At its September 24 meeting, the City Council approved a Special Use Permit for the construction of a new Athletic Performance Center at Greenhill School, located at 4141 Spring Valley Road. The two-story, 21,250-square-foot facility will include five relocated tennis courts, a field hockey field, a putting green, and additional parking spaces.

The project also includes improvements to the site’s emergency access and landscape enhancements, exceeding tree mitigation requirements. Greenhill School worked with neighboring residents to address concerns about a tree buffer along the northern property line, committing to plant 11 new live oak trees. Construction is expected to begin later this year.

City Council Approves Three New Sculptures for AMLI Treehouse Development

At the September 24 City Council meeting, the Addison Arbor Foundation presented plans for three new sculptures to be installed in the open space of the AMLI Treehouse Development. These installations, funded by a $150,000 contribution from the developer as part of the public art agreement, will bring unique and exciting additions to Addison’s public art collection.

The sculptures include:

  • "Four Moons Rising" – a kinetic sculpture by Jeff Kahn
  • "Three Songs for a Poet" – a stainless steel tree sculpture by Michael Warrick
  • "Happy Dogs" – a corten steel dog sculpture by Dale Rogers

You can watch the Council's public art discussion here and read the presentation here.

Council Approves FY24 Budget Amendment

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 budget was adopted by the Council on September 12, 2023. The City Council approved a second budget amendment for that budget at its September 24, 2024 meeting. These adjustments account for significant budget variances and ensure funding is allocated appropriately across departments. Key items include:

  • General Fund: $387,000 allocated for legal services, Animal Control, emergency communications, and street maintenance, offset by increased sales tax revenue and 911 fees.
  • Infrastructure Investment Fund: $1.39 million for prior year commitments and $500,000 for Conference Centre renovations.
  • Capital Projects Fund: $656,903 for prior obligations and a new emergency communications facility.
  • Self-Funded Special Projects Fund: $1.22 million for storm cleanup, staffing studies, tree mitigation, and trail consulting.
  • Utility Fund: $200,000 for water and wastewater master plan updates.
  • Other Funds: Additional appropriations for equipment replacement and facility repairs.

Important Announcements

New Town Website Launches September 30 with New Domain: AddisonTx.gov

The website approved by the City Council last fall will launch on September 30. The new site includes the main website, as well as subsites for Parks and Recreation, Addison Airport, Addison Police Department, Economic Development, and Development Services. The new navigation is reorganized using the metrics of how visitors use the website like data analysis and user testing to make it easier to find the most requested pages.

The site also features a new website address: AddisonTx.gov. Because a government entity has to be approved to use a .gov domain, search engines give priority to these sites, increasing searchability. The new URL also aligns with the Town staff email addresses to simplify communication. The prior site (addisontexas.net), will redirect to the new site, but we are asking the community to move toward using the new address.

As the new site is rolled out, there may be missed links or moved pages Please feel free to contact the Marketing and Tourism Department at marketing@addisontx.gov with any questions, concerns, or suggestions.

We appreciate your patience as we work to improve our communication channels for the community.

Public Safety Non-Emergency Number Changes October 1

To better serve our community, beginning October 1 the new Public Safety non-emergency number will be:

469-289-3270

When Addison joined the North Texas Emergency Communications Center (NTECC), our existing non-emergency number (972-450-7156) was forwarded to the new dispatch center. Because the transfer goes through two different networks (Spectrum and ATT) before it reaches NTECC, we've had several outages recently. This change will allow more reliability for this important communication channel. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Sidecar Social Renovation Enhances Visitor Experience

Sidecar Social General Manager Bobby Jones gave Mayor Bruce Arfsten, Deputy Mayor Pro Tempore Nancy Craig, and Council Member Howard Freed a preview of their newly remodeled space in Village on the Parkway. Addison's Sidecar Social, the brand's original location, opened five years ago. The remodel involved moving the downstairs stage to be the central focus, but the biggest changes can be found upstairs. The balcony space has been completely renovated to remove walls and add comfortable seating and a bar.

If Sidecar Social isn't already on your list of possible event venues, it should be. The popular attraction is already booking holiday parties!

Les Lacs Park Closed for Maintenance October 3 from 6am - 2:30pm

Les Lacs Park, including the playground and pavilion, will be closed for maintenance on Thursday, October 3, from 6am to 2:30pm. During this time, the Parks Department will apply Fall pre-emergent herbicide and conduct maintenance on the playground, pavilion, and irrigation system. The pickleball and tennis courts will remain open and unaffected by the closure. Thank you for your patience.

Redding Trail Dog Park to Close on October 7 for Improvements.

Redding Trail Dog Park will be closed beginning October 7 until early April for improvements. A temporary dog park is being built at the corner of Marsh Lane and Beltway Road so that pet owners will continue to have access to an off-leash area during construction. Drinking fountains will not be provided during construction, so all guests are asked to provide drinking water for themselves and their pets.

The Town is adding a trail connection from the existing loop of the Redding Trail to the new sidewalk that has been recently finished as part of the Midway Road construction project. To accommodate the new trail segment, the Town will be adjusting the shape of the dog park to allow the trail to pass to the south of it. Although the dog park is losing space on its south side, it will be extended to the north and to the east, making it 1,700 square feet larger than it is currently. Another change is that the new fence will made of strong and durable recycled plastic lumber, rather than a chain link material, which is no longer allowed by Oncor in their easement. All seating will be reinstalled on newly poured concrete walkways, and brand-new freeze-proof dog water stations will be added to allow for year-round use. The dog park and new trail segment are expected to open in early April.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve this popular dog park.
