Building back

Putting the hurricane behind us

The hurricane can feel like it was a long time ago, though for many the process of building back is ongoing. Earlier this month, more roofing materials arrived on the ferry to complete work replacing roofs on homes.

We've also supported work at the Lower Bay School, where Devvy has been managing the creation of a new classroom. This to replace one that was lost to the storm.

One day the hurricane will be a very distant memory, and these repairs help speed that day. None of this would be possible without the spirit and partnership that makes Bequia such a special place.

Making music

The Viatores Quartet to visit SVG this Februrary

The Viatores Quartet is a young string quartet based in Berlin, though in their make up and their approach, are truly citizens of the world. Its name is from the Latin term "viatores," which means travellers. They've said that their defining characteristic is the blend of their different perspectives, cultures, and traditions.

Viatores was among the ten string quartets selected to compete at the 2025 Banff International String Quartet Competition in Canada this past August, one of the prizes being a residency in SVG. Entirely funded by independent foundations, not our donors, The Grenadines Initiative is providing the logistics for the 10-day stay—finding venues, sourcing accommodations, and making connections with communities on Bequia, St Vincent, and Canouan.

During their stay they will lead workshops with local music students, perform, and also host an open rehearsal at the Methodist Church in Kingstown.

During the residency, they say it will be "enriching for us to learn more deeply about the culture of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and [we are] truly excited to have the chance to work with and exchange ideas with local musicians and composers."

We're excited too. The residency, which begins on February 28, will include visits to schools in Port Elizabeth and Paget Farm, as well as community events.
