Support a Peace Monument on Central Square

Keene City Hall Council Chambers

Wednesday, June 26, 6pm

Inspired and led by Keene native, Carl Jacobs, MIP is collaborating with Rotary Club of Keene and the Elm City Rotary in proposing a Peace Monument on Keene’s Central Square.

A central theme of Rotary International is the promotion of peace in their various service, education, mediation, and advocacy efforts. This spirit is often expressed in public spaces through the erection of Peace Poles (see illustration) and deeply resonates with the community, understanding and social justice mission of MIP.

Following our proposal of a Peace Pole located in Central Square, Keene city staff have encouraged the concept to include the fountain in the center of the square becoming an element of a “peace monument,” perhaps incorporating the classic Peace Pole structure or conveying the message of peace through another distinctive, inspirational design. We are supportive of the placement of a peace monument on Central Square in whatever form it takes.

The Keene Municipal Services, Facilities and Infrastructure Committee (MSFI) will discuss this proposal at their meeting Wednesday, June 26, 6pm in Council Chambers, City Hall, 2nd floor. We will be speaking up in support of a Peace Monument on Keene’s Central Square and committing ourselves to work with the city to make it happen.

Come out on Wednesday or send written support by Tuesday, 6/25, 1pm via email on the city website or to MSFI Committee, City of Keene, 3 Washington St, Keene, NH 03431. Here is a link to a suggested message to the committee that you can copy and personalize.

Location Change to:

Delegates Hall, 2nd Floor, Cheshire County Courthouse, 12 Court St, Keene

MIP is partnering with The Community Kitchen (TCK) and Monadnock Family Services to offer a workshop that will help prepare faith volunteers to interact well with others, particularly people who have gone through trauma. More broadly this training is for people within MIP to teach us more about trauma, its effects on ourselves, and on other people.

Many people have experienced trauma. There is growing understanding about this. This training can be helpful for our work together in MIP, our work with The Community Kitchen, and likely for anyone in our congregations who volunteers.

This session will be led by Anena Hansen of Trauma Responsive Monadnock. RSVP or contact Jodi Newell, TCK Volunteer Coordinator, jnewell@thecommunitykitchen.org.
