PSC Men’s Basketball: a season of triumph and growth 

The PSC men’s basketball team wrapped up an unforgettable season on March 23, falling 83-75 to Trinidad State in the first round of the NJCAA National Championship tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. Entering as the no. 10 seed, the Pirates fought hard but ultimately fell short in their bid for a national title.

Eye-opening. Fun. Exciting. Those are the words Head Coach Penny Belford uses to describe this season for a young but determined PSC Women’s Basketball team. With only three returning players – Katiya Casey, Jaida McDonald (both All-Conference First Team) and Audreonia Benson (All-Conference Second Team) – the team went through tremendous growth while navigating challenges.

A senior in PSC’s Cosmetology program, Jenny is set to graduate this May, ready to bring bold colors and artistic flair to the beauty industry. Initially a Psychology major, she switched gears to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother, a Panama City hairdresser and salon owner.

For nearly five decades, Coach Pete Peña has been a pillar of PSC’s athletic program, but his connection to PSC runs even deeper. Originally from New York, Peña found his true home in Pensacola when former men’s basketball coach Chip Boes brought him on as an assistant coach nearly 47 years ago.

PSC Women’s Softball continues to battle hard

Now midway through their season, the Pensacola State Women’s Softball team split a doubleheader against Tallahassee State College on March 22. In the first game, the Eagles struck first, stringing together four singles in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Pensacola finally got on the board in the sixth inning, ultimately winning the game 3-2. In the second game, the wheels came off for the Pirates as they lost 7-1. Despite matching Tallahassee with seven hits, PSC could not string theirs together. 

The Pirates return to action this afternoon, March 26, hosting Gulf Coast State at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and then head to Chipola College next Wednesday for a two-game series. Learn more about the team’s season at https://athletics.pensacolastate.edu/sports/sball/index

PSC Men’s Baseball continues to battle and compete midway through the season

At the halfway mark of the season, Pensacola State baseball remains in the fight, currently standing at 4-4 in conference play. With a young roster facing tough competition early on, Head Coach Bryan Lewallyn describes the season as one of resilience and perseverance. “We hit the restart button after some challenges early in the season,” said Lewallyn. “As any season goes, adversity sets in. We got decimated with injuries right as we started to peak, which forced several key players to the sidelines.”
