EDI Spotlight: Julius M. Wilder MD, PhD
Our final EDI Spotlight of 2022 shines on Julius Wilder, MD, PhD, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist and Chair of the Department of Medicine’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Antiracism committee (DEIAR). Wilder talks to us about balancing his oversight of efforts to improve equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within his Department while still practicing clinical care. He also talks about how his doctorate in medical sociology complements his perspective as a clinician, his hopes for reducing health disparities in our local community, and his loves of jazz, time with family, and watching Duke basketball when he’s not at work.

Duke Pioneer Charles Johnson, MD, Celebrated During Alumni Weekend
The life of the late Charles Johnson II, MD, was celebrated with a special tribute during Duke University School of Medicine's Alumni Weekend. The first Black faculty member in the School of Medicine, Johnson became a valuable mentor to Black students and residents and was a leader in the move toward equity. Alumni and friends are raising money for a scholarship in his name.

Study Finds Patient’s Race Affects Ovarian Cancer Care
Non-Hispanic Black patients are less likely to receive guideline-appropriate treatment for ovarian cancer than non-Hispanic White patients, significantly affecting their treatment quality and survival chances, according to a study led by Duke Health researchers.

Mapping Duke’s Racial Equity Resources
In response to results of the 2021 Duke Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Climate Survey, the Racial Equity Advisory Council (REAC) is working on what will become the university’s first searchable dashboard of educational engagement opportunities. The new database will connect members of the Duke community with educational opportunities across campus.

Program Expands Access to Pediatric Mental Health Services
The incidence of mental health problems in children and adolescents has risen at alarming rates since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Learn how the Duke Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is building capacity to help through NC-PAL, a free provider-to-provider consultation line. EDI leader Annise Weaver is one of NC-PAL’s co-directors.
