Update from our Executive Director

A busy season - and it's only getting started!

It has been a busy and rewarding spring and early summer here at SaskSoil!

Last week, our board gathered in sunny Saskatoon for two days of training, planning, and collaboration. These sessions provided a valuable opportunity to review and refresh our strategic plan, which we look forward to sharing with members at our AGM next February. We also spent time focused on governance, reviewing our current model and exploring ways to strengthen our effectiveness as an organization so that we can continue to serve our members and support soil health across Saskatchewan.

As we head into summer, we're looking forward to connecting with many of you at our upcoming field days.  If you're heading to Ag in Motion, we hope you'll stop by the SaskSoil booth for some great soil health conversation. We'll have four outstanding presenters on hand who are helping lead the way in knowledge and innovation, and as always, we're looking forward to hearing what's happening on your farm and talking about the practices and ideas shaping the future of soil stewardship.

We also have a fantastic prize giveaway at the booth, generously donated by South Country Equipment. Be sure to stop in and enter your name for a chance to win a Pit Boss grill or a 12-volt kids' Gator!

We're also pleased to announce an additional field day has been added to our summer lineup. Join us on July 13 in Shaunavon for a drone seeding demonstration focused on cover-cropping practices. We're looking forward to another great opportunity to learn, share ideas, and see innovation in action.

Thank you for your continued support of SaskSoils. We appreciate the enthusiasm, knowledge, and commitment our members bring to this organization, and we look forward to seeing many of you at events throughout the summer.

More information on all upcoming events can be found below or at SaskSoil.ca/event.

Soil Health Resources

Managing Soil Salinity in Saskatchewan with Perennial Forages

That white crust in your low spots isn't just an eyesore.

If you've been watching saline patches creep across your lower fields, you're not alone — AAFC estimates roughly 30% of prairie agricultural land is either already saline or at risk. The good news: perennial forages, especially alfalfa, are one of the most practical tools Saskatchewan producers have for stopping that spread.

We've put together a new resource on the sasksoil.ca resource library pulling from on-farm experience and Saskatchewan-specific research — including USask forage breeder Dr. Bill Biligetu's work testing forage mixes on moderately saline sites near Clavet and Redvers. It covers when to act (earlier than most producers expect), management strategies for rehabilitation and why the upslope ground matters just as much as the saline patch itself.

Managing Marginal Acres: Lessons from a Saskatchewan Grain Farm

Farming marginal land doesn’t have to mean farming at a loss. In a recent SaskSoil webinar, fourth‑generation producer Michael Ferguson shared how his family identifies unproductive acres and turns them into opportunities through smarter input decisions, cover crops, intercropping, and grazing partnerships. From improving water infiltration in cover‑cropped fields to reducing costs on low‑yield zones with variable rate fertilization, Michael shows how strategic management can boost profitability while strengthening soil health.

Rebuilding Soil with Forages and Cattle with Adrienne Ivey

Watch the Recording!

If you missed our May webinar, the recording is now available. Saskatchewan rancher and mixed farmer Adrienne Ivey shares a practical look at rebuilding soil with long‑term forages and cattle — a system her family has refined over two decades on their Ituna-area operation.

Adrienne walks through what’s working on their farm today, including how alfalfa drives organic matter gains, why cattle impact matters as much as the forage, how their 5–8‑year rotation supports organic acres, and what they’ve learned about salinity, bale grazing, virtual fencing, and riparian management.

In the Field

Join us in the field and at Ag in Motion!

Field days are one of the best opportunities to connect with fellow producers, ask questions, and explore what soil health practices might work on your farm. We're also showcasing some of our intercrop research at our Ag in Motion booth. Be sure to stop by and check it out.
