From The Office of
WV Secretary of State
Mac Warner
For Immediate Release:
September 26, 2023

In Response to the Dept. of Homeland Security's
Hiring of Brennan, Clapper and Kolbe;

Warner asks Congress to withhold DHS funding until ethical leadership is in place
Charleston, W.Va. – Outraged that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would offer lucrative employment contracts to former officials involved in misleading the American public on the contents of the Hunter Biden laptop in order to help Joe Biden win the 2020 presidential election, WV Secretary of State Mac Warner is asking congressional leaders to withhold funding from the DHS until the agency's integrity is restored.

In a letter sent to Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and Congresswoman Kay Granger who serves as Chair of the House Committee on Appropriations (see below), Secretary Warner says that the integrity of DHS continues to erode with recent and irresponsible actions of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Warner is challenging Mayorkas' recent decision to hire three individuals who were instrumental in the intentional effort to mislead voters during the 2020 presidential election to cover up the contents of the Hunter Biden laptop. Warner said that John Brennan, James Klapper, and Paul Kolbe were three of the government officials who signed a letter to the American people falsely claiming that the Hunter Biden laptop was nothing more than Russian disinformation.

"Such dishonest people should not be granted access to sensitive government information, nor rewarded with high-ranking positions and salaries funded with taxpayer dollars," Secretary Warner wrote to McCarthy and Granger. "They have shamed themselves, dishonored their respective institutions, and vastly decreased trust in our election system."

In addition to McCarthy and Granger, Secretary Warner sent a copy of his letter to all four members of the West Virginia delegation to the United States Congress as well as to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary Mayorkas.

Subject: Until Integrity is Restored, Do Not Fund the Department of Homeland Security

Dear Speaker McCarthy and Chairwoman Granger:

Perhaps the strongest tool the US Constitution gives the US House of Representatives is the power of the purse. For the sake of national government integrity, I call on you to refuse funding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as long as Secretary Mayorkas employs John Brennan, James Clapper, Paul Kolbe, and any others who falsely claimed in writing that the contents of the Hunter Biden laptop were likely Russian disinformation.

Along with several other Secretaries of State, I have previously called on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to resign for initiating the dishonest and intentionally misleading letter. In our attached correspondence to Congress dated July 12, 2023, my colleagues and I stated, “The full weight of the US Government should be used to ensure free, and fair, elections . . . . Congress should hold perpetrators accountable and consider all available corrective measures[.]” Accountability, at a bare minimum, requires withdrawal of security clearances, and prohibiting those who were proven through the House Judiciary Committee to have purposely lied to the American people from ever working as government employees.

Such dishonest people should not be granted access to sensitive government information, nor rewarded with high-ranking positions and salaries funded with taxpayer dollars. They have shamed themselves, dishonored their respective institutions, and vastly decreased trust in our election system. Secretary Mayorkas ignored their misdeeds and had the audacity to announce, “I express my deep gratitude to these distinguished individuals for dedicating their exceptional expertise, experience, and vision to our critical mission[.]” (See September 19, 2023 announcement establishing Homeland Intelligence “Experts” Group.) His statement casts irrevocable doubt on his judgment and he, too, should resign immediately.

You have the power to stop this abomination. Use it by refusing DHS funding until people of integrity are in charge.

Sincerely,
Mac Warner
West Virginia Secretary of State
