LOWER SCHOOL

Halfway Through VPK: What Should My Child Know?

As we reach the midpoint of the school year, many families begin to wonder: What should my child know? The Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards provide a helpful framework to guide teachers, parents, and children through these early learning milestones. Here are a few questions to help you reflect on your preschooler’s growth so far:

  • Social-Emotional Development: Can your child express their feelings in appropriate ways? Are they learning to manage emotions and build friendships?
  • Physical Development: Is your child beginning to take care of personal hygiene, like washing hands or brushing teeth with guidance?
  • Social Studies: Does your child understand and follow basic rules at home and in the classroom?
  • Creative Expression: Can your child share their thoughts and feelings through drawing, painting, or other creative activities?
  • Mathematical Thinking: Is your child using words like besidebelowbehind, or under to describe where things are?
  • Scientific Inquiry: Can your child make simple predictions, like how water might change a dry sponge or when ice will melt?
  • Language & Literacy: Is your child listening with understanding, speaking in complete sentences, and using new vocabulary?
  • Approaches to Learning: Does your child show curiosity, plan how to start a new activity, or reflect on what they learned?

These questions aren’t meant to be a checklist, but rather a way to celebrate progress and support continued growth. Every child develops at their own pace, and with love, encouragement, and partnership between home and school, they’ll be ready for the exciting journey ahead!

Join us for an evening filled with festive performances, joyful music, and plenty of holiday spirit as our students showcase their hard work and talent. This special event is a wonderful way to celebrate the season together as a school community.

Students should arrive at 5:30 p.m. to prep for the show. Family and friends are welcome! We encourage everyone to arrive early to find parking and settle in before the show begins. Ticket orders were sent home last week, so please email Nora if you did not receive one.

We can’t wait to celebrate this magical time of year with our Collage families!

Mental Health Moment of the Week: The Importance of Social Development

Social development is an important part of the elementary school years. While school, sports, and organized activities naturally support these skills, everyday moments can be just as meaningful.

Encouraging your child to order from a server, chat with a cashier, or offer something to a neighbor can create simple, positive opportunities to build confidence and connection.

Note from Nurse Chelsea

Sleep = Immune Superpower

Why it matters: Deep sleep is when the body produces infection-fighting cells.

Tips for parents:

  • Set a routine - Keep the same bedtime/waketime daily, even on weekends.
  • Screen-free wind-down - Turn off screens at least 1 hour before bed.
  • Soothing rituals - Taking a bath, reading a book, or listening to calming music signals bedtime.
  • A dark & cool room - Sleep quality improves in a dark, slightly cool space.

Eat the Rainbow: Whole Wheat Can’t Be Beat!

Lower school students continue learning through Collage's Eat the Rainbow program. Students are exploring foods by color each month. This month's color is brown.

Learn more about whole wheat bread :

  • Nutrient Spotlight: It contains complex carbohydrates, fiber, B vitamins, and iron.
  • Health Benefits: Wheat bread provides long-lasting energy, supports healthy digestion, and helps maintain steady blood sugar.
  • Kid-Friendly Tip: Choose whole wheat bread for sandwiches or toast, and use fun cookie cutters to make shapes kids will love.

We encourage families to join in at home. Let's all make healthy eating fun and colorful!
