OSHER NEWS
The Osher Program is Closing!
Due to lack of funds, low enrollment, much too cheaply priced tuition, too many Zoom meetings, staff burnout, and no volunteer participation, we regret to inform you that the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is closing its doors. Thank you very much for your support over the past 20 years.
April Fools!
Only kidding. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is alive and well, and looking forward to another 20 years at the University of Utah. But now that we have your attention: We do need more volunteer support, especially as we strive to regain lost ground, post-pandemic. Please stay tuned to this email newsletter for announcements regarding upcoming one-hour summer classes about volunteer opportunities to support Osher.

In the meantime, please volunteer to help us grow this spring by sharing copies of our spring and summer brochures around town at your favorite haunts: coffee shops and restaurants, local libraries and bookstores, and doctor’s and dentist’s offices. Help us get the word out by telling two friends about Osher and all of the wonderful classes, lectures, and special events we offer each term. Remember this funny TV ad from the 1980s? It’s exactly what Osher needs right now to keep thriving!
Upcoming Classes
We all have stuff at home that we don't know what to do with. Perhaps it is difficult to part with for sentimental reasons. Maybe it is too nice to drop at a thrift store. Come learn about community resources and have your questions answered by a professional organizer.

Looking at events and people in the run-up to the Civil War, we will trace the increasingly fractious divide between slave states and abolitionists. Included will be the Compromise of 1850, the concept of Popular Sovereignty leading to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Lincoln-Douglas Debates of 1858, Lincoln's Cooper Union speech and the run-up to secession, as well as analysis of John Brown's attack at Harper's Ferry. In the second hour, we will continue with a discussion of the novel as contemporary literature. Readers and history buffs welcome!

Two things you wouldn't expect to see in the same sentence are hard cider and pickleball. But Second Summit Hard Cider and Pickleball did just that when they opened in 2023. In addition to their ever-changing list of hard ciders, they have four regulation pickleball courts and are offering Osher members a free lesson. Pickleball is now the fastest growing sport in the US because it is very inclusive, doesn't require a lot of running or strong athletic skills. Second Summit will provide as many pickleball coaches as needed to provide the free lesson to those in attendance. Stay to enjoy food and cider, available for purchase, and/or sign up for Second Summit's regularly scheduled events like bingo and arts and crafts.

Southern Utah's 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre and Its Aftermath
Barbara Jones Brown, Director, Signature Books Publishing
On September 11, 1857, a group of Mormon militiamen in southwest Utah coaxed a group of California-bound emigrants from the bulwark of their encircled wagons and then massacred them. The slaughter left the bodies of more than a hundred men, women, and children strewn across a highland valley called the Mountain Meadows. This presentation will elucidate the historical factors that led to the horrific crime as well as how healing and reconciliation can be achieved after such atrocities. Barbara Jones Brown was previously the executive director of the Mormon History Association, historical director of Better Days 2020, and content editor of Massacre at Mountain Meadows (2008).
