| | As usual, TV commercials clue us in on societal trends, including healthcare-related. Based on your recent (and oft repeated) viewing episodes of 30-second spots, do these brands look familiar? | | |
Why are billions of $ invested in creating innovative pharmaceutical therapies being approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA)? Scientifically, these new classes of drugs are referred to as GLP1, SGLT2 and DPP-4, which doesn’t help us understand very well. More confusing acronyms to (try to) digest.
As weight loss gets headlines, other potential medical benefits are crucial to reducing risks associated with chronic disease. For example, research indicates these treatments may help lower blood sugar levels, thus reducing risks for cardiovascular complications and kidney disease.
March’s National Kidney Month is an opportune time to better understand kidney function and hear the facts about how it relates to our auditory system.
| | Did you know your kidneys filter all of your blood up to 25 times daily? | | Located below the rib cage, on each side of your spine, kidneys are two bean-shaped organs about the size of a fist. They remove wastes, extra fluids and acids from your body, while helping to maintain ideal balances of water, salts and minerals in your blood. Without this continuous cleansing process, nerves, muscles, and other tissues may not function normally. Case in point, the specialized workings of your inner ear’s miniscule cochlea with an estimated length of 1/3” and width of 1/4”.1 | | | To learn more about Kidney Function, see this video: | | Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) includes conditions that damage your kidneys and decrease their ability to keep you healthy. If kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in your blood and make you feel sick. You may develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health, and nerve damage. Also, kidney disease increases your risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. These problems may happen slowly over a long period of time. | | |

Within the human body, our circulatory system is vital to many functions. Simply stated, if there is not optimal blood flow, or toxic impurities in tiny arteries and vessels, harmful effects are likely to occur. In our therapeutic realm, this is particularly important to hearing function. As emphasized, our cochlea is quite small.
It is estimated that for 37 million American adults with CKD, 54% have some hearing loss. From a body system perspective, being aware of these risk factors makes sense.

When you or your loved ones have chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease or kidney disease, evidence shows there is an increased risk of hearing loss. Early detection is essential, and research suggests that 5 healthy habits can help prevent or delay CKD’s progression.
- Don’t smoke
- Control your blood pressure
- Eat a nutritious diet
- Exercise frequently and maintain a proper weight
- Have your Doctor test for kidney and heart disease
