Volume 10: December 22, 2022
In sports, a Cinderella story happens when a team wins hearts and minds with their improbable and seemingly impossible ascent to the top. Few sports situations can garner fan attention the way a Cinderella story does.

Last weekend, Esperanza Prep, the No. 5 seed (pictured below), gave us our very own Cinderella story, defying all odds and coming out on top as the 2022 Community Sports Leagues flag football champions!
Led by Coach Ernesto Van Eiker, Esperanza Prep won their victory while demonstrating the Seven Cs:
  1. Common goal
  2. Commitment
  3. Complementary roles
  4. Clear communication
  5. Constructive conflict
  6. Cohesion
  7. Credible coaching
It all started during the semifinals when Esperanza Prep won 22-8 against M.S. 108M, the heavily favored No. 2 seed and this season's defending champions.

On another field, East Side, the No. 1 seed (pictured below), defeated Equality Charter, the No. 6 seed, 15-13 in an overtime win.
Esperanza Prep then faced off against East Side — who dominated the competition throughout the regular season — and gloriously won the high-scoring championship game, 31-25!

Congratulations to Esperanza Prep on their championship win! We also want to congratulate the second-place winners, East Side, and the third-place winners, M.S.108M! Thank you to all of the players for your hard work. Your unmatched sportsmanship made this season a truly special one.
Please note:

Registration for Asphalt Green's basketball Community Sports Leagues will open soon! Be on the lookout for more information in the coming weeks.

Tip of the Week:
Keep Playing!
From everything you learned this season to the competitive spirit you nurtured, we encourage you to keep that positive energy going!

Here are a few ways to continue your growth as a student-athlete:

  • Read up: Keep expanding your knowledge by reading about sports. Try researching on the internet or checking out your local library.
  • Keep moving: One of the best parts about playing sports is it keeps you healthy and fit, helping you in all aspects of life.
  • Organize football games: Get your friends together in the park! Set a time and date, and reach out to everyone you know to come out and play. Now that you've learned the rules, you can be the commissioner and make it fun for all.
  • Be proud of yourself: Being part of a team is challenging. Adversity of all kinds presented itself throughout this season but you overcame it all to finish as a student-athlete. Take a moment to congratulate yourself and be proud!
