By carefully braiding the topics of environmentalism, queer identity and family roots into a collection of poems, Emile Ottinger '23 has completed a project as one of six students selected as 2022 Eckley Scholars.

Titan Athletics

As fall sports get under way, the schedule has been set for the second annual Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational. The Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team will welcome Yeshiva University, Webster University and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to the Shirk Center on Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 12-13.

This event is free and open to the public.

The work of Dave Varel '05 was recently published in The Journal of African American History. His article is titled "The John Abraham Davis Saga: An Intimate History of Racism and Resilience in the US Civil Service, 1862–1928."


B. Charles and Joyce Eichhorn Ames Professor of Physics Gabriel Spalding has been elevated to the status of senior member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which notes that “IEEE Senior Membership is an honor bestowed only to those who have made significant contributions to the profession.”


Additionally, for the 19th year in a row, Spalding has chaired an international conference on Optical Trapping & Optical Micromanipulation (OTOM), which is part of the SPIE meeting on Optics and Photonics.


Jennifer Kaschak '95 received the Excellence in Advancing Interdisciplinary Study Award for her academic leadership as an associate professor of education at The University of Scranton. 

Wellness Corner

The fall wellness schedule will begin Monday, Sept.12. 


  • Yoga will be available from 12:15-12:55 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays in the Niepagen South Classroom in the Shirk Center. Yoga will be taught by David Vale from the Yoga Lab. The university gives employees an extra 15 minutes for lunch if participating in a university sponsored exercise program.
  • Personal Fitness will take place from 4:45-5:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the track in the Shirk Center. Grace Redman, personal trainer, will lead this program. 


Both classes are designed for all fitness levels. Taking time for yourself is very important for your physical and mental health!

Student Loan Forgiveness

President Biden recently announced a plan for the federal government to provide some student loan forgiveness based on income and also extended the pause on monthly student loan payments. To learn more about the cancellation program, please visit this page through the Federal Student Aid Office


Sidewalk Closure

The City of Bloomington has notified the Physical Plant that they need to repair two manholes along the University Street extended sidewalk. They have begun work today (Monday, Aug. 29), and the work is estimated to last two weeks. This will affect the Quad sidewalk in front of Buck Hall and move east, extending to the halfway point of the Quad. If you have any questions regarding the City of Bloomington project, please contact Kenton Frost at the Physical Plant at 309-556-3263.
